A US Airways Airbus A320 passenger plane carrying more than 100 commuters has crashed into the Hudson River in New York City.

The plane, which the FAA said was flight 1549 from LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, is partially submerged.

Rescue boats at the scene have been picking up passengers standing on the plane's wings.

Two of the plane's engines were disabled by bird strikes, officials said. No casualties have been reported.

Passengers: First Engine on Fire, Then Frigid Water

A giant crane and a barge were brought in today to begin hauling a partially submerged jetliner out of the Hudson River, one day after it was apparently knocked out of the sky by birds and spectacularly splashed down alongside Manhattan's skyscrapers.

A dramatic picture of the US Airways aircraft that crashed in the Hudson River appeared around the world within minutes after a bystander uploaded a photograph taken with his mobile telephone on to the website Twitter.

In another illustration of the growing power of Twitter, where users post mini-messages, Janis Krums took the picture with his iPhone and sent it to the site.
