Ellie Vardy amazed her family when she woke up from a two-month coma and said: 'Good morning'.The 14-year-old had suffered a broken neck, a brain injury and several broken bones when a Ford Fiesta in which she was a passenger was involved in a high-speed collision with a taxi close to her home in Eckington, near Sheffield, on September 29.
Her parents, Paul and Nicola, feared the worst but were by her side in Sheffield Children’s Hospital when she awoke.
‘We were absolutely stunned, although it was what we were praying for,’ said Mr Vardy, 38.
'To be told that your daughter could die and then for this to happen after eight weeks, we just can’t believe it.'
'She is having to wear a neck brace but she is now able to sit up and we have been able to take her off the ward in a wheelchair.'
Paul and Nicola are hoping their daughter will be able to go home for Christmas Day.
The teenager's plight had prompted more than 5,000 people to join a Facebook group called 'Wake up Ellie, we miss you'.
