Neighbours who stood by Shannon Matthew's family watch it fall apart

For those friends and neighbours on the Dewsbury Moor estate who gave their time, their energy and their limited resources to the search for the missing schoolgirl, the arrests of the past week have been shattering. They had told anyone prepared to listen that Ms Matthews was a loving mother and Mr Meehan a doting substitute father. When Shannon was found, apparently unharmed, they celebrated and waited expectantly for her to come home.

First there was fear, then there was joy and now there's a sense of bewilderment on the street where Shannon Matthews used to live.

Residents on Moorside Road in Dewsbury helped look for Shannon when she was missing, then celebrated when she was found 24 days later.

Now they don't know how to feel.

"We've all been through an emotional rollercoaster of ups and downs. What on earth can possibly happen next?" asked one woman.

Mother of Shannon Matthews remanded in custody

Karen Matthews has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with perverting the course of justice and child neglect in connection to her daughter Shannon who was the subject of a 24-day police search before being found hiding a mile away from home at that of her stepfather's uncle.

Mrs Matthews appeared at Dewsbury magistrates' court this morning, following her arrest on Sunday on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. She is the fourth family member to be arrested over Shannon's disappearance after a school swimming trip on 19 February.
