EU backs Juncker to head Commission in blow to UK

EU leaders meeting in Brussels have nominated former Luxembourg PM Jean-Claude Juncker as the next president of the European Commission.

The move came despite strong opposition from Britain.

Prime Minister David Cameron pushed for a vote on Mr Juncker - breaking with tradition - and 26 out of 28 countries backed him, UK officials said.

Only Mr Cameron and Hungarian PM Viktor Orban voted against him. Mr Juncker is also likely to win a vote by Euro MPs.

The UK must renegotiate its EU role regardless of Juncker's appointment

The necessity may be starker, but the UK's need to extricate itself from centralised control has long been apparent

Juncker! Juncker! Stick It Up Your Jumper!

"I am more confident than ever that I will be the next European Commission President," tweeted former Prime Minister of Luxembourg Jean-Claude Juncker on 4 June. Quite how he knew with such certainty so far in advance of the EU's elected national leaders is something of a mystery. Until, that is, you consider the continuing dominance of the Franco-German axis in the European Union, and the historical absurdity of believing that a British prime minister could 'take a lead in Europe' or 'grasp the agenda of reform' - with or without a handbag.
