Heather breaks down as she attacks critics

Heather Mills McCartney accused a "certain corner" today of feeding spin to the media to smear her.

Sir Paul McCartney's estranged wife, who is locked in divorce negotiations with her husband, also launched a fierce attack on the media for " pushing her to the edge" and called on the public to stop buying tabloid newspapers.

In an interview with GMTV, she compared the media's treatment of her to that of Kate McCann and Princess Diana, and said she had received death threats and been "close to suicide".

At one point she appeared to break down, later apologising for becoming upset and saying: "What are we doing as a nation buying these newspapers?

"We need to force a change as a responsible nation."

She said she has launched a petition at the European Parliament to strengthen the law against "a specific portion" of the media.

"I need to get everybody to petition that they don't want to be lied to any more by the press. They want their children to grow up in a society where press is just and fair and the size of the lie they print is the size of the apology they have to print."

She became tearful as she said: "They make up such lies. They've called me a *****, a golddigger, a fantasist, a liar, the most unbelievably hurtful things, and I've stayed quiet for my daughter.

"But my daughter... we've had death threats, I've been close to suicide. I'm so upset about this... I've had worse press than a paedophile or a murderer and I've done nothing but charity for 20 years."

She continued: "My sister was crying her eyes out because that awful Jordan and Peter Andre did a joke on Sunday and I've six amputee girls crying their eyes out because they're getting bullied at school because people are joking about the loss of my limb.

"Jonathan Ross said 'She's such an effing liar, we're going to find out she's got two legs instead of one'."

She refuted suggestions that she has "used the press", answering: " I haven't used the press for anything but my charity."

She produced a scrapbook with clippings she claimed showed pictures taken by aggressive paparazzi photographers, alongside apologies printed by newspapers relating to their coverage of her.

She said: "I am the one that is abused daily. I have protected Paul for this long and I am trying to protect him but I am being pushed to the edge and I don't want my daughter when she is 12 going on the internet and reading this totally one-sided story.

"My plan is to change the law in the European Parliament and I will do it."

She said she has been "offered nothing" in her divorce case, but she was unable to discuss it for legal reasons.

She said: "How do you know if I even want any money? I'm £1.5 million in debt in lawyers' fees, and that's as much as I can say or I go to jail, for telling the truth.

"So I'm gagged at the moment because I'm not allowed to say a word while the media are fed this spin by a certain corner."

Reports that she wanted a clause in her divorce settlement to allow her to sell her story were "rubbish", she said.

"I can sell my story right now. I'm trying to protect Paul and our daughter. I am trying, and I'm being pushed to the edge.

"Eighteen months of abuse, 4,400 abusive articles.

"Look what they're doing to the McCanns. The woman has lost, and the poor father, have lost their daughter. What are we doing as a nation?

"What are we doing persecuting a woman that is devastated behind closed doors and trying to hold it together, as I have for 18 months.

"What did the paparazzi do to Diana? They chased her and they killed her.

"Never mind all these other stories, that is what we are doing as a nation, buying these newspapers. Every time you buy one of those, you contribute to it. So force a change for responsible journalism."

Mills McCartney said the only respite she has enjoyed from continual media intrusion was when she was in the US.

"I would live in America in two seconds, but I live here to keep my daughter close to her father," she said.

"You have no idea how much I have done to compromise."

She produced a large cuttings folder full of newspaper stories about her - which she numbered at 4,000.

The show played video footage filmed by the ex-Beatle's estranged wife over recent months showing photographers pursuing her.

"I have a box of evidence that's going to a certain person should anything happen to me, so if you top me off it's still going to that person, and the truth will come out," she said.

"There is so much fear from a certain party of the truth coming out that lots of things have been put out and done, so the police came round and said 'you have had serious death threats from an underground movement'.

"That means my daughter's life is at risk, because she's with me all the time."

Despite this, Mills McCartney claimed, she has never phoned 999, instead using the non-emergency number to contact police.

She placed responsibility for the death threats clearly with the media.

"A certain part of the tabloid media created such a hate campaign against me it put my life and my daughter's life at risk," she said, choking back sobs.

"That's why I considered killing myself."

The most sensational claims made during Mills McCartney's acrimonious break-up with Sir Paul came in an extraordinary document widely believed to have been leaked to the media by the Mills McCartney camp.

The document - which she denies leaking - made a series of remarkable claims about the ex-Beatle's behaviour during their five-year marriage.

There were also claims that Sir Paul changed the locks at the marital home, froze her bank account and removed £10 million-worth of paintings from her house.

Mills McCartney paid tribute to the devotion of her friends through her struggles.

"I've got 300 friends who came to my daughter's party, and they are biting their tongues not to talk, because they're so loyal," she said.

"Even a journalist said to my publicist 'her friends are so loyal, we can't even get them to say a word'.

"Whereas other people's so-called friends are putting stuff out right, left and centre."

She ended by saying she wanted the culture of fame to become a force for good for future generations.

She said: "We don't want them (our children) to live in a celebrity culture unless that celebrity is going to be used in life to make a difference in the finite amount of seconds we have left on the planet."

Exclusive: Heather Mills and the hate tape
Off-camera during a day of unhinged ranting on TV, Mrs Macca plays a recording of Paul admitting that he hit Linda
By Fiona Cummins 01/11/2007

Heather Mills stuck the knife into Sir Paul McCartney yesterday by playing a tape in which he allegedly admitted hitting first wife Linda.

Estranged Heather, 39, produced the tape off camera after a day of interviews in which she ranted she had been pushed to the brink by death threats and smears.

A witness who listened in said: "It was extraordinary. Heather and Paul were shouting. He can be heard confessing he hit Linda 'once or twice'." Sir Paul, 65, is said to fear Heather is on the verge of a "total breakdown".

Haunted by death threats and sobbing uncontrollably as her marriage collapsed, the former model almost took her own life with a cocktail of pills, it was revealed last night.

But at the last minute Heather, 39 - mum of Beatrice, four - blurted out her plan and friends rushed to her rescue.

One said: "She was on the brink, make no mistake. It was a serious situation which could have gone the wrong way.

"She knew that in the state she was in anything could have happened."

Heather's cry for help was disclosed as she went on a day-long TV and radio blitzkrieg, in which she ranted that she was being persecuted by Macca and the media. She also admitting she had considered killing herself.

After one highly emotional interview she amazed witnesses by playing a tape of a row with Sir Paul, 65, in which he allegedly admitted hitting his late wife Linda.

An insider said: "It was quite extraordinary. There were raised voices. Heather and Paul were shouting. Paul can be heard confessing he hit Linda 'once or twice'.

"No one knew what to do. It was astonishing stuff and seemed to back up Heather's claim that she's the victim in all this."

Sir Paul told friends last night he feared Heather was on the verge of "a total breakdown". One pal said: "Like everyone else, he can't quite believe what's happened.

"Heather is clearly disturbed and in a highly agitated state. His major concern is for their daughter."

Heather's round of interviews took in GMTV and ITV's This Morning as well as Radio Five Live and BBC News 24. She was still going at the end of the day when she featured on BBC1's Six O'Clock News.

In one bizarre outburst on GMTV, she confessed she had thought about suicide after receiving death threats - because then Bea would be protected.

She wept: "I considered killing myself as I thought if I'm dead, she's safe and she can be with her father. And that's the truth."

But she came closer to carrying out her threat than she admitted on TV. Referring to the pills scare, a friend said: "It was real, terrifyingly real. It had all got on top of her.

"Everyone was incredibly concerned. It was basically a cry for help, but no one was taking any chances. She wasn't left alone for some time because of her state of mind." Heather yesterday offered a further glimpse into why her seemingly fairytale marriage ended in disaster, telling friends: "We had two good years then Paul started on the drink and drugs."

One pal said: "It was great for the first couple of years. She managed to wean him off the booze and dope and they were really happy.

"Then it started to go wrong. When Paul went on his world tour, he got back into the drinking and drug-taking, which Heather hated.

"She said he became like a Jekyll and Hyde character and subjected her to a catalogue of abuse. It all went downhill from there."

In her interviews Heather shied clear of naming any possible divorce settlement figure, saying: "How do you know if I even want any money?"

She claimed she owed £1.5million in legal fees. Sources poured scorn on her comment.

One said: "Heather wanted £10million to disappear out of Paul's life but he refused, saying, 'I've made nothing since I've been with you'. She told him, 'You've made £250million from two world tours'. He replied, 'They made a loss'."

Sources close to Macca added: "She has asked for money. The negotiations are still continuing. Paul isn't deliberately stalling. He's just letting the legal process happen naturally.

"But make no mistake, he'll strenuously and vigorously defend any allegations Heather makes against him."

During her GMTV interview Heather said "a box of evidence is going to a certain person" should anything happen to her. Cryptically, she said: "So if you top me off, it's going to that person."

It is understood that Macca has asked his lawyers to get a copy of the interview.

Our source said his designer daughter Stella was "less than impressed" by Heather. The insider revealed: "She remarked 'Well, it's Halloween, isn't it? That's when all the evil witches come out'."

Heather: The Rant Goes On

We thought Heather Mills had aired her angst full and proper the other day.

But it seems she's got further rage to release.

Following back-to-back interviews with a loada British broadcasters, Heather made her way on to US on Thursday and went through the whole routine state side.

With a bit of extra goss thrown in for good measure.

On US show Today, 39-year-old Heather told host Matt Lauer that she offered to walk away from divorce proceedings with Paul McCartney without a penny to her name - if only he admitted responsibility for their marital break-down.

Heather said her very words to Paul last year were:

"You know why we split, you know the truth. You need to stand up and say, 'I am responsible for the breakdown of this marriage.'

"If you say that, I'll walk away with nothing and we'll do a very gentle and quick divorce."

She added: "He promised to do that - and he did nothing."

Heather then put in an appearance on TV programme Extra, where she laid into Paul's daughter, Stella McCartney.

"Every single week Stella tried to break up our marriage. She was so jealous," said Heather.

"Stella wasn't interested in her dad's happiness... she's done some evil, evil things.

"She's even scraped my face out of a photo."

Phew. We reckon Heather should go take a little lie-down.

All this ranting is hardly soup for the soul...

Heather Mills in new TV rant: Why I taped McCartney
By Fiona Cummins, Showbiz Reporter Fiona.Cummins@Mirror.Co.Uk

Heather Mills last night told how she has recorded all her conversations with Sir Paul McCartney so she can reveal the truth about their bitter split.

In another round of TV tirades, the 39-year-old claimed the former Beatle promised to admit he was responsible for the collapse of their five-year marriage but backed down - and said taping the chat was the only way anyone would believe her.

Heather also laid into Sir Paul's daughter Stella, blaming her for the break-up, while claiming another reason was his refusal to donate more of his £825million to charity.

In one astonish outburst on US TV show Today, the tearful mum-of-one declared: "Why do you think I've had to record every single conversation? Because nobody will believe me.

"When we split I said to Paul, 'I'm going to be crucified. I'll have a modern day stoning. You know why we split, you know the truth. You need to stand up and say, 'I am responsible for the break-up of this marriage'.

"I said, 'If you say that, I'll walk away with nothing and we'll do a gentle and quick divorce'. And he promised he'd do that and I have evidence of that. And he did nothing. He knows I was at a suicide point, and still nothing was done."

And she told ABC's Good Morning America: "If I wanted to put pressure on Paul I would expose the whole truth."

In another rant, on the show Extra, Heather accused Stella of being "evil". She said: "Every single week Stella tried to break up our marriage. She was so jealous. She's done some evil, evil things. She scraped my face out of a photo when they were in psychiatric session together."

Bitter Heather also told how she and Sir Paul, who split in May last year, rowed constantly over his refusal to give more cash to good causes. She said: "How could anybody have that kind of money and not to do more for charity? That is what we argued about all the time."

The US TV outbursts followed on from Wednesday's round of tirades here on GMTV and This Morning as well as radio shows, in which she said she was on the brink of suicide and played a recording off-camera in which Sir Paul, 65, allegedly admitted he hit first wife Linda.

Heather even insisted she helped turn Macca into one of Britain's best loved music legends.

She added: "He was a broken man when I met him. He wouldn't perform. I was a huge support for Paul."

Sources close to the singer said he is less than impressed at her screen rants and could push for full custody of their four-year-old daughter Bea.

One added: "He is angry and bewildered. He is concerned about her state of mind."

This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield last night told how producers gave Heather the chance to back out of her slot after seeing the backlash from her GMTV tirade.

But he added: "She was over like a shot. She wanted to do it. "Heather certainly had a lot to say. She is a women on the ragged edge."

Even Heather deserves our sympathy
HEATHER'S TV TIRADES.. TAKE TWO
By Alison Phillips, Associate Editor

A young woman being divorced by her multimillionaire husband produced a taped confession this week in which he allegedly admitted domestic violence.

The woman - let's call her Heather - says he was also abusive and violent after drink and drug binges.

She is involved in such a painful divorce battle that it has led her to the brink of suicide. Fairly simple one for your moral barometer, then - Heather, victim. Multimillionaire OAP husband, bully. But add Mills after Heather and she isn't a charity worker and mum at the end of her tether, she's a screeching, publicity hungry, money grabbing slag. Weird, eh?

It's a controversial view but surely Heather Mills deserves some sympathy? Paul McCartney could have ended the divorce battle in moments with a payoff which would be just a drop in his financial ocean. Yet instead he has chosen to continue the very public wranglings. Heather said she's had worse press than a paedophile or a murderer.

And she's not wrong. Yes of course I've read the interviews with ex-lovers, former friends and the journalist she impersonated. There's no doubt they paint a picture of her curious relationship with the truth.

But whatever her faults she appears to have been shabbily treated by her husband. And whether we like it or not she has helped huge numbers of people and animals through her charity and campaigning work. Heather now believes she can change public perceptions of her with a round of interviews.

Sadly even her extraordinary energy isn't up to this task. Because we Brits pride ourselves on knowing what we like and what we don't. And unfortunately for her we don't like people who are too full of themselves, we don't like people who are ruthless in pursuing ambition and we certainly don't like people who marry Beatles.

MACCA MOCKED MY LEG LOSS
EXCLUSIVE Heather's shock claim SECRETS OF THE MACCAGATE TAPES

Heather Mills claims to have secretly recorded Paul McCartney laughing about her amputated leg in a sophisticated phonebugging operation.

Macca's wife has told a friend that she has the explosive taped recording under lock and key - and is prepared to use it against Sir Paul in their divorce battle.

The ex-Beatle made the cruel jibe about her disability in a conversation with Stella last year, the friend claims. Both he and fashion designer Stella are then heard chortling at Heather's expense.

Later, the friend says an enraged Heather dramatically confronted Sir Paul with the tape - and played it to him.

Macca, she claims, apologised immediately and asked how she had got it.

The friend said: "She told him she'd been passed it by a journalist pal, who gave it to her because he was so appalled at what was said.

"But the truth was that it had been recorded in her bugging operation - but at the time she couldn't tell him that."

The tape is among recordings Heather is threatening to make public unless the Beatle admits fault in their marriage breakdown.

She had a tape recorder placed in a cupboard at Sir Paul's country home in Peasmarsh, East Sussex, and had a bug put on the phone line to record all calls.

Heather installed the devices after fearing that Sir Paul may have been bugging her.

The existence of the surveillance operation - dubbed Maccagate - was first disclosed in July 2006 by the Sunday Mirror.

But the sheer scale of it and the dynamite material it has unearthed can now be revealed.

As well as the tape of Stella and Sir Paul alledgedly laughing at her, Heather says she also has recordings of Macca "bitching about her with his kids" and chats with his staff about his finances.

The revelations come after a tumultuous week in which the Macca divorce plumbed new depths of vitriol - with Heather openly attacking Stella as "evil".

A friend of Heather's said: "What she says she heard Sir Paul say on the tape about her amputated leg left her incandescent with rage.

"She says he used an insulting slang word about disabled people.

Then he and Stella - her archenemy - had a laugh about it.

Heather was - and still is - seething about it."

Heather used a voice-activated recorder to covertly tape conversations at Peasmarsh.

She arranged to have calls recorded with a simple lead linked to the phone socket. The friend went on: "She first started having the phones bugged months before they split up - and the surveillance continued for two months after.

"Heather had a whole system in place to have the recordings analysed and transcribed for anything which could be used against her former husband.

"Heather has kept copies of anything which she thinks can be used to damage Paul's reputation. She says there are a number of moments in which Paul bitches about her with his kids.

"There are also conversations with his staff where he gives instructions about money arrangements which she believes can also be used against him."

Meanwhile, we can reveal more of the evidence Heather claims to have for her allegation that Sir Paul, 65, was violent to his first wife Linda during their marriage - widely regarded as one of the most loving in showbusiness.

Heather, 39, claims Paul once made a donation to a battered wives charity in Scotland. She says it was Linda's way of getting him to make amends for hitting her. But his daughters Stella and Mary say there is no truth in the claims of domestic violence.

They insist Linda was a strong woman who, if hit even once, would have left with the kids.

And Sir Paul's aides say the donation proves nothing as it is one of countless gifts he has made to good causes - but without the public fanfare Heather makes of her charity work. He also gave money to her charity after being introduced at the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain awards. And his aides point out no one would have known about the gift, had Heather not later revealed it.

But Macca is refusing to be drawn into Heather's new strategy of public warfare, including a a string of astonishing TV interviews.

He is resolutely sticking to his decision to keep a dignified silence and resolve the divorce settlement in court.

Despite Heather's claims on TV this week that no offer has been made, the Sunday Mirror can reveal Paul's legal team HAS made numerous financial offers to Heather.

This week, as he watched events unfold from Peasmarch bolthole, he busied himself with his latest project - composing a new guitar concerto in his home studio.

On Friday he handed daughter Beatrice, four, back to Heather, as scheduled - but the couple did not discuss the events of the week.

A Macca insider said: "Paul has found this week very distressing and is worried about Heather's state of mind. He hates their laundry being aired in public and find it upsetting seeing her. But he will not answer what Heather said on television by talking about it himself.

"Privately, though, he was upset by what she said and it is deeply harrowing to see Heather like that."

She exploded in public this week with her loathing for Stella, saying: "Every single week Stella tried to break up our marriage. She was so jealous. Stella wasn't interested in her dad's happiness. I can't protect her any longer. She's done some evil, evil things."

Heather has now taken to mimicking Stella's accent and saying: "Daddy, I don't want her (Heather) to get the rings or the diamonds."

The source said: "Heather hating Stella is not new - she always blamed Stella for undermining her with Sir Paul. But the sheer scale of it is incredible, heightened by all the taped phone calls."

Meanwhile, Heather has documented another alleged outburst about disability by Sir Paul.

She claims that over dinner in a restaurant in March 2001 she told him she was flying to India to distribute limbs to the victims of the Gujarat earthquake.

He retorted: "No you are not," and caused her huge offence by allegedly using an insulting slang term for disabled people.

Heather - who lost a leg when hit by a police motorcycle in 1993 - stormed out of the restaurant and went to India anyway. While she was there, Sir Paul repeatedly apologised for his remarks in calls and text messages.

Heather was so angry she kept a written record of the calls and retained the texts in case she needed them for future use.

On Heather's return from India, consumed by regret, Sir Paul greeted her with flowers. They patched up the row, but the incident was one of the key events in the fracturing of their marriage.

"The Gujarat incident is one of the backdrops to Heather's anger at Sir Paul," a Macca insider said.

Heather says she confronted her husband in a fury and he apologised

EXCLUSIVE: She has dig at Heather with one-legged necklace design

Macca's fashion designer daughter Stella has taken revenge on stepmother Heather Mills - by creating a necklace that features a single leg.

Stella, 36, designed the £300 silver pendant as part of her first jewellery collection next season.

The necklace was unveiled to fashion industry insiders in Paris last month. A source said: "A lot of people thought it was really edgy while others secretly thought it was out of order. It's such an obvious dig. It will cause a stir when it goes on sale."

Heather, who lost a leg in a road accident, launched an astonishing TV attack last week on Stella - accusing her of breaking up her marriage to Sir Paul.

The ex-model, in the middle of a multi-million pound divorce battle with the ex-Beatle, said: "She's done some evil, evil things. She scraped my face out of a photo."

Stella was said to be unhappy when her dad married Heather and refused to design her wedding dress. She was unavailable for comment yesterday.
