COP SHAMBLES WARNING
THE SEARCH FOR MADELEINE DAY 157

British crime chiefs told Portuguese police to "smarten up their act" during high-level talks last week that lead to the sacking of the cop leading the Madeleine inquiry.

British police chiefs and Government officials heaped pressure on the Portuguese as the shambolic investigation lay in tatters.

"Portuguese cops were told to sort it out," a police source told the Sunday Mirror, which last week exposed the long, boozy lunch breaks taken by Goncalo Amaral.

"It's not good enough when the man who was supposed to be running the world's biggest police inquiry was taking huge lunch breaks," the source said.

Leicestershire Police - the McCanns' local force - the Home Office and Foreign Office were all believed to have been involved in the talks.

The Sunday Mirror can also reveal how DNA evidence collected by officers in Praia da Luz is being considered "fatally flawed" and "useless".

A Leicestershire police source said: "There is a huge sense of embarrassment about the whole thing. Questions are now being asked along the lines of, 'Why have we been supporting such a bunch off incompetents?'

"Leicester police aren't happy about it at all."

Portuguese Police Union Sues British Media Over Madeleine McCann

The head of PJ detective’s union confirmed that a libel suit was filed against “two British Media organizations”, because of stories published that were considered defamatory of Poliícia Judiciária. “After we filled it, the British Media moved from attacks against the Portuguese Police to personal attacks against Criminal Coordinator Gonçalo Amaral”, said Carlos Anjos. “They are trying to undermine his credibility, either as a professional or as a individual, insulting him without even respecting his privacy and his family.” The PJ detective’s union president said they were in touch with Gonçalo Amaral and, if he wants to file also a libel suit, he will have the “full support of ASFIC.”

Carlos Anjos rejected accusations from British Media about the alleged incompetence of Portuguese Police, in Madeleine’s investigation, and referred the case of Rhys Jones, a 11-years-old boy who was shot on August 22: “After more than one month, British Police wasn’t able to arrest his killer. In this case, they have more than a dozen witnesses, but until now they have arrested 17 suspects and they sent them free, didn’t charged nobody”

Good to hear the investigation is getting somewhere.

New evidence 'links parents' in Maddie case

Monday, October 8, 2007

New DNA evidence which could link Gerry and Kate McCann to their daughter Madeleine's disappearance has been found by British scientists, it was claimed today.

Results at the Forensic Science Service laboratory in Birmingham back up earlier findings which led to the couple being named as official suspects, it was reported.

A source said new evidence showed the investigation was focused 'where it should be'.
The DNA evidence was obtained from material gathered from the McCanns' apartment in Praia da Luz, their hire car and other parts of the holiday complex where they were staying, the Evening Standard reported.

The source said: 'There is no reason to change the direction of the investigation and everything that has emerged indicates that it is focusing where it should.

'The new material adds to the existing picture that has been built up by police and fills in a few more pieces of the jigsaw.'

The McCanns deny any involvement in Madeleine's disapperance.

Their spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said there are 'wholly innocent explanations' for any material gathered by police.

McCanns fear years of suspicion
Ryan Parry in Praia Da Luz

Distraught Kate and Gerry McCann fear they will be forced to live under a cloud of suspicion for the rest of their lives.

They believe bungling Portuguese police will never solve the mystery of Madeleine's disappearance - and have little hope of finding her dead or alive.

A source close to the family said: "Gerry and Kate could go on forever without knowing what happened to their daughter and that's unbearable.

"If Madeleine isn't found then they will have to live under a cloud of suspicion for years, it's a nightmare scenario." The chaotic investigation has ground to a halt because officers have exhausted the flimsy evidence they wanted to use to bring charges against Kate and Gerry.

Privately they admit that there is little chance of groundbreaking new clues - or finding the body that they need to bolster their accusations against the McCanns.

Meanwhile, Kate and Gerry are still arguidos or official suspects - and face months of legal wrangling before they can get that status lifted.

The source said: "They can be arguidos for eight months. They fear the legal process will drag on and on.

"They desperately hope Madeleine is still alive. But Gerry and Kate are realistic enough to realise she might be dead. If that is the case they want to know what happened so they can resolve it in their own minds."

There has been concern over Kate's health, with claims she is worryingly thin and unable to eat because of the strain she is under. But the source said: "She's eating well. Yes she's thin, but if anything she is eating better now than ever."

Madeleine: Separating Fact And Fiction

So the McCanns are in the clear. Haven't you heard? It's true - it was on the front page of a national newspaper. It said the DNA evidence was found to be inconclusive.

What? You read something completely different? Oh yes, on the same day another newspaper splashed on how new DNA tests had proved the parents were involved.

It is another typical day in the Madeleine McCann story. Not much actually happens, but thousands of words are written by reporters, and thousands more by people on websites reacting to the latest stories.

Clarence Mitchell has a telephone that never stops ringing. He is the McCanns' official spokesman and in the course of one hour with me in a coffee shop he spent more than half of it dealing with phone calls from British, Spanish and Portuguese journalists checking out the latest rumours.

Here is a selection of the questions that Mr Mitchell has dealt with in the past week:

The Body Locator: A South African man who claims to be able to trace bodies using samples of DNA was called in to help. This is true, though it happened several weeks ago but was not reported at the time. Daniel Kruger had contacted Gerry and Kate McCann to offer his services, and because he presented some evidence to make his track record appear to be credible, they said yes.

Working in conjunction with the Portuguese Judicial Police, and before the McCanns themselves became official suspects, a location in Luz was searched, and nothing was found.

The Psychic Barber: There has still been no contact between the McCanns and a Glaswegian psychic called Gordon Smith who says he might be able to help.

Kate Is Ill And Losing Weight: Yes, Kate McCann has lost some weight because of the stress of the past five months, but she is eating regularly, and is not sick.

The McCanns Are About To Return To Portugal: They have no plans to do so at the moment, but have not ruled out going back of their own accord to continue to publicise Madeleine's disappearance and urge people to keep looking for her.

British Police Say Madeleine Is Dead: No they do not, at least not officially. A Portuguese newspaper claimed a source had told them this, but Leicestershire Police issued a denial.

Campaign Manager Sacked: Justine McGuinness ran the Find Madeleine Campaign for three months. She was not fired, but her short-term contract was not renewed because the McCanns needed someone better at dealing with the huge international media interest.

After she left she submitted a bill for £51,000, including £20,000 for overtime and expenses. Mr Mitchell would only say it was being dealt with by the trustees of the Fund. More than £1m was donated by supporters in the five months since Madeleine vanished.

And finally, back to the claims of new DNA evidence. Sky sources say that the Forensic Science Service is still working on samples collected from the McCanns hire car.

"We have said before that Kate and Gerry have nothing to hide and any material which may have been found can be wholly and innocently explained," Clarence Mitchell said.

"They want their Arguido status to be lifted as soon as possible and are confident it will happen in due course."

There are certain to be further "updates" in the coming days. Some will be true, some not. At Sky News we will continue to do our best to separate fact from fiction.

McCanns deny new DNA link
By Stewart McClean and Ryan Parry in Portimao

Police in Portugal stopped searching for Madeleine McCann three months ago, friends of parents Kate and Gerry claimed yesterday.

They said detectives decided resources would be better used trying to link the couple to their four-year-old daughter's disappearance.

The news emerged as the Portuguese press claimed the detective who interrogated Kate last month faces trial for allegedly torturing an innocent robbery suspect.

Chief Inspector Tavares Almeida is number two on the inquiry into Madeleine's disappearance and is the second top officer in the shambolic inquiry to be accused of violent treatment of suspects.

Disgraced case co-ordinator Goncalo Amaral, who was booted off the investigation last week, is fighting claims that he covered up the beating of another missing girl's mother.

Family friends said last night that Kate and Gerry believed the only serious work to trace Madeleine was being done by their own team of private investigators, working for the Find Madeleine campaign.

One said: "The feeling is that the search for Madeleine has definitely gone on hold from the moment that the police began to suspect Kate and Gerry.

"They are both very concerned about that.

"They have always cooperated fully with the police and their priority is to bring Madeleine home safely."

The McCann's spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, confirmed the couple had employed private investigators to follow up possible leads outside Portugal. Mr Mitchell said: "All of the leads that have a degree of credibility about them and warrant further investigation are looked into.

"Anything being done by the campaign is done within the law, and the police are informed of every possible lead.

"We are not going to comment on the changing personnel in the case.

"But Kate and Gerry want to see whoever takes charge of the investigation moving it forward to find Madeleine.

"Kate and Gerry have nothing to hide."

A Portuguese newspaper reported yesterday that 48-year-old Almeida will face trial over allegations he beat up a rail worker suspected of being part of a gang who sexually assaulted children. The man was acquitted and lodged a formal complaint against detectives. Former British child protection officer Mark Williams-Thomas said: "It does seem strange to have put such people into such a high-profile investigation, which could cause questions to be asked.

"The focus should be on finding Madeleine, not on senior officers in the case."

Yesterday the McCanns again declared their innocence after claims that new DNA evidence linked them to their daughter's disappearance.

Meanwhile, the ongoing analysis of dozens of samples by the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham was said not to have substantially advanced the investigation.

Results are passed to Portugal police on a daily basis.

An insider said: "Madeleine and her parents are bound to be linked by DNA because they were together on the night she vanished. There has been no dramatic breakthrough."

Madeleine McCann: DNA Jigsaw, Torture And The Twilight Zone

MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann

DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE DNA PUTS PARENTS IN FRAME. British experts insist their tests are valid”

Page 7: “DNA tests ‘fill in more pictures of jigsaw’” – A source close to the investigation provides the headline quote. But what has been found is unsaid, and how it involves Kate and Gerry McCann

“New police chief is accused of torture” – Chief inspector Tavares Almeida is to face charges of “beating up a robbery suspect in custody”. The Express says this is a “torture scandal”. The alleged victim – who was accused of being part of a gang that sexually abused children and coerced them into violent muggings - was acquitted

Mr Almeida was dubbed “Kate’s Tormenter”, possibly by the Express today

DAILY MAIL page 8: “New DNA tests ‘put the McCanns back under suspicion’”

The McCanns, both “doctors” are said to be “extremely distressed by the claims”

DAILY MIRROR page 7: “COPS GAVE UP SEARCH THREE MONTHS AGO”

“Investigation in tatters as second detective accused of violence”

THE SUN front page: “McCANNS’ AGONY – MADDIE: NEW DNA LINK TO KATE”

British forensic scientists “are said to believe tests on fresh clues support earlier findings that led to the McCanns being declared suspects”

Page 4: “McCANNS ‘LIVING IN A TWILIGHT WORLD’”

Clarence Michelle says: “We had reports that DNA had proved ‘inconclusive’ and even it had put the McCanns in the clear.”

Reports from whom is not reported

“Now there are reports that the DNA is making them look suspect. There are wholly innocent explanations for any material police may or may not have found. This just goes to show what a twilight zone we are operating in”

The Twilight Zone – wasn’t that the name of the TV show with the sting in the tail?

DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE: NW DNA DAMNS PARENTS. Brit police find shock evidence”

But they have not been arrested. The McCanns are just suspects. How is this damning?

Madeleine McCann: The Tapas Group’s Movements On Tape

PAULO Reis in Portugal writes on Madeleine McCann:

A team headed by two university professors has created a computer-animated video with the movements of the Tapas group, during the crucial hours, on May 3, before Kate McCann found Madeleine was missing. The two experts, Paulo Sargento and Paulo Gamito, based their study on time lines and statements from witnesses published by The Times, BBC and the Portuguese newspapers Público and Sol.

Paulo Sargento told TV channel SIC that after the McCann arrived at the restaurant, almost every 5 minutes there was somebody leaving the table…going out to the apartments or coming from that direction – 7 persons went out 14 times in a period of two hours. The criminal expert considered the possibility of a kidnap as “not consistent” with so many regular checkings. “It will be very difficult, there was a very short period of time” available for a kidnapper to act, without being spotted, he said. The team is now working on another virtual scenario: a walk from Ocean Club to the church.

New detective named in Madeleine case

Portuguese authorities have named a more senior police officer to head the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, a spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

Paulo Rebelo, will replace Goncalo Amaral, who was removed last week after accusing the British police of being influenced by the girl's parents over which leads to follow in the case.

A spokeswoman for the judicial police said Rebelo would be the new chief of the criminal investigation department in Portimao, which oversees the Algarve region where Madeleine disappeared on May 3 from her bedroom in a resort hotel.

No explanation was given for the appointment of Rebelo, second in charge at the judicial police, but it signalled greater determination to resolve the case in the face of criticism in Britain over slow progress.

Portuguese police named Gerry and Kate McCann -- Madeleine's parents -- as formal suspects in the case on Sept 7. The parents say they are innocent and have launched a high-profile campaign to find their daughter, who they think was abducted.

There is one other suspect in the case.

Rebelo has worked in the anti-drug department of the judicial police and was previously involved in the Casa Pia case, one of Portugal's best known cases involving child abuse.

McCann children 'were not alone in apartment'

Significant new evidence about the night Madeleine McCann disappeared has been uncovered, it was claimed, as one of Portugal’s most senior detectives took charge of the investigation.

Paulo Rebelo, an assistant national director of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ), took over responsibility for the case last night. He made his name in the investigation into Portugal’s most notorious paedophile ring.

His appointment was made amid reports in Portugal that detectives have evidence contradicting Kate and Gerry McCann's version of the events of the night that they reported their daughter missing.

New search at Madeleine McCann apartment

Detectives have launched new searches at the apartment where Madeleine McCann disappeared - returning to the scene for first time since late July

Seven Portuguese officers entered the house at 7am today and remained inside until the early afternoon as they continued to attempt to build a case against official suspects Kate and Gerry McCann.

Six children 'were in Maddie flat'

There may have been six other children in the McCanns' holiday apartment the night Madeleine went missing, it was claimed last night.

Detectives now believe that four children of friends were also sleeping there – contradicting what Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry, have always said.

Until now, it was thought the four-yearold was left with just her brother and sister, two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie, while the adults went to eat in a nearby tapas bar in the resort of Praia da Luz.

Police sources told Portuguese newspaper 24 Horas they had significant evidence that a total of seven children had been in the McCann's apartment.

The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell denounced the latest claims as part of a deliberate smear operation.

He said: 'It's utter rubbish. If you put seven children together, you're going to have a far harder time getting them to sleep than three.

The theory emerged as one of Portugal's most senior detectives took charge of the case. Paulo Rebelo is a senior investigation co-ordinator at national police HQ.
