Jimmy's horror at isle link

SIR Jimmy Savile said yesterday he is horrified at being linked to the Jersey hell home.

The Jim’ll Fix It star, 81, told The Sun: “It makes life very unpleasant for someone like me.

“For anybody who opens a garden fete 38 years ago for half an hour and ends up with people nudging each other in restaurants and saying, ‘That man’s associated with those murdered children,’ it’s a nasty thing.

'Abuse' campaigners' justice fight

Campaigners supporting the victims of alleged child abuse at a former Jersey care home have vowed to fight on for greater openness and reform of the judicial system on the island.

This comes after several hundred people gathered in Royal Square, St Helier, outside the main government building to voice their support for those alleging abuse at Haut de la Garenne and to call for political change.

More than 160 people have come forward to tell police of rape and violence against the children at the home from the 1960s onwards.

A number have said that their complaints have been repeatedly ignored and some claim the abuse was covered up by politicians keen to protect the island's reputation.

JERSEY POLICE SLAM 'SMEAR CAMPAIGN'

Police investigating allegations of abuse at a former children's home have said that they would not be deflected from their inquiry by attempts to smear them.

The force said a number of former officers who had left in recent years following corruption allegations had carried out a high-profile campaign to rubbish detectives investigating them.

Jersey home police boss heads to UK

The detective leading the Jersey care home abuse inquiry is travelling to the UK to seek advice from specialist officers at Scotland Yard.

Deputy police chief Lenny Harper will hold two days of meetings with detectives who have experience of major investigations and have been helping the Haut de la Garenne inquiry.

Search teams on Jersey are continuing to clear rubble from the second of four underground chambers after a specialist sniffer dog gave a positive "indication".

Jersey discoveries

POLICE in Jersey were yesterday continuing to search a second cellar at a former care home at the centre of child abuse allegations. Forensic officers at the Haut de la Garenne site earlier found more items after the second cellar was opened.

The police have not disclosed what the items are, and Deputy Chief of Police Lenny Harper said it was too early to say if the finds were routine or something more sinister.
