Thursday March 17 2005 21:28 GMT World health experts have called for a ban on people under 18 using sunbeds. The World Health Organization said young people who get burnt from exposure to UV radiation have a higher risk of skin cancer as adults. Research made a direct link between using sunbeds and cancer. The health group want governments to pass laws banning young people from using them. In the UK, around 70,000 people a year get skin cancer. It's the third most common cancer among people aged 15-19. What is cancer? An increase in people using sunbeds, along with the fashion to look tanned, are thought to be the main reasons that more people are getting the skin disease. Banned already Sunbeds are thought to be dangerous because they can give out very high levels of UV- or ultraviolet - radiation which is much stronger than the mid-day summer sun in most countries. France and California in the USA already ban under 18s from using sunbeds. bbc |

Anyone who uses one of those sunbeds is simply stupid, ignorant, or just plain old insane. Despite that, what people want the govt. to do? Ban such salons and equipment? If people are dumb enough to use such things, let them. --- Calrissian: Whiter than the driven snow. |

Oh most people know the dangers but there are still a LOT of people who go for a weekly session. Lady near here owns a salon and is making a fortune. (She also looks like a well smoked kipper)

![]() Vile, disgusting, and of course,... the irony being that such people actually think they look more attractive having such a sexy radiation burn. I repeat once more, if people choose to do that to their bodies...so be it. They make their choices, and they gotta live with it. The only people that concern me are the children, for when summer 2005 really gets going, so many of them are going to get burnt. --- Calrissian: Factor 30.....all year round |

Some scientist has said that at the beginning human population was coloured "black" on earth and if the human population still survives - it'll turn again in to "black". Maybe some "white" ones would like to hurry that change when they are taking sunbaths
But I know someone who has a desease that's called psoriasis and sunbaths help her with the skinsymptoms a lot during the dark winter-season - and it's cheaper to take them instead of moving with her six-membered family somewhere south and sunny area on earth. And I know that someone has been helped under 18 years of age with acne by taking sunbaths. There's still a risk and that's great that people has been warned about them seriously. They should also remind that sunburns are also a big health risk (skin-cancer) and that's why everyone should protect themselves during the sunny season. And Calrissian - I use normally factor 2 to 8 and I don't change much my skin-colour during the summer. But some facial creams has factor 30 in them.

In evolutionary terms, as people migrated, skin pigment changed - due to the necessity of gaining Vit'D (primarily). Culturally, with the intl 'global village', eventually everyone from every country will be a nice chocolatey colour - think 'denzel washington' and 'halle berry'. Personally, sounds great to me. Yes, there are a few groups of people who benefit from sunbeds ,but 99.97% of people will not. Factor 2-8, why bother? Are you not aware that those sorts of skin protection are essentially pointless. Scientifically speaking, anything below 30 is effectively useless. Calrissian: Would have loved to have been the colour of chocolate |
