Britain faces a threat more significant than anything since the cold war and the Nazi tyranny, Sir Ian Blair, the new Metropolitan Police Commissioner has warned.

And potential terrorists would see the forthcoming general election as "a real opportunity to launch an attack on the United Kingdom", he said.

Sir Ian spoke out in an interview with Whitehall and Westminster World, a newspaper which circulates among civil servants.

He said the terrorist threat facing the UK was as dangerous as ever.

"We must be aware that al Qaeda will see the opportunity this year for a worldwide statement - terrorists might just remember the bombings in Madrid.

"We are facing a threat more significant than anything we have faced since the cold war and the Nazi tyranny before it.

"Of course the IRA was a credible threat, but it was not capable of or willing to carry out mass-casualty attacks without warning."

See this is the problem are we really, or do they just want a police state. I havent got time for terrorists but I also hav'nt got time for Police Chiefs and Politicians trying to scare the **** out of everybody when they should quietly be getting on with it and have more common sense. I think there more bricking it, because they could be a target more like. Every now and then you hear about Terrorists blar blar... I lived through a time when Nuclear Weapons were pointing at every city in this country and they didn't go on about it, every other bloody day.

The IRA didn't seem too bothered about mass-casualities without warning in the bombings in Birmingham & Guildford in the 1970's - the difference was that they didn't intentionally become suicide-bombers.

Al Queda are no worse than the IRA. I have many relatives who lived in the Falls Rd 'ghetto' in Belfast throughout 'The Troubles' - and a cousin who was nearly fatally shot because she had the 'audacity' to live in a 'mixed' area, but not one of them saw fit to go out and kill or injure innocent people - or any people, for that matter. The real heroes of any 'struggle' are those who try to resolve conflict and make progress without resorting to criminal behaviour.

To quote one fool.......W...

BRING IT ON.

If any 'terrorists' would come visit my local council estate, the locals would make the Guantanomo treatment/conditions look like a Walt Disney picnic. But no, if there is UK attack, it'll probably be one of those lame hit and runs, where they do a bit of damage, and then hide away.
----

I'm tired of the waiting, lets have it. They know where I live, i'm ready for them. I must at least be a 'secondary target' for a few people out there.

The constant going on about the threats is copying the American way.
The Americans don't want the citizens to feel safe in their homes as they are harder the control. By making them uneasy with the constant thought that they could be attacked at any moment it is easier to get them to agree to actions which they would otherwise object to.
On a bettle field the most dangerous place you can be is within 100 miles of an American gun regardless of what side you fighting for.
Even if your not fighting if you are thought to be in with the Americans you are still more likely to be shot or attacked.

This is why I think we are seeing more reminders of the likelyhood of an attack. And in the run up to the election this will increase ,not so much because there will be an attack but more to help the electorate decide who to vote for and make Iraq seem justified thus trying to get the goverment back into office.

Don't get me wrong there are groups out there who carry out attacks and there has been for many years. At this stage attacks on coalition countries I'd say are still high to have troops removed. After which the UK and finally the US will most likely become targets. Anything that happens in the US at present will first have a suspision aimed towards a terroist attack to further unease the public and then later the actual cause be the told.

Most of it is propaganda for political gain but there is and always has been a risk of some group attacking somewhere.

*nodding* yep I'm with Larry on this one. If we worried about everything they want us to worry about then where would we have time to have a life? They want to control us and nobody controls me! It's all political and they're all as bad as each other.

Am sceptical about all the alerts. 9/11 happened when noone expected it, as did the Madrid bombings etc...terrorists are clearly more intelligent than American Intelligence which has to be one of the biggest oxymorons in the English language. Lets get them when during a major event when they are expecting it...screw that!!!!! Is certainly not something I concern myself about. I am well aware of my own mortality, and when it happens, it happens. Its not as if I am going to wake up one morning and say 'Oh dear, I'm dead, what a shame'

On a lighter note, Scotland's millennium dome, the new parliament building with its 'bomb proof windows' suffered a great loss when broken by some paper! ::lol:: bring it on!

Yes, it makes 'sense' for terrorists to avoid big events like the Olympics - because millions will have been spent on extra security - so their threats have had an economic effect - but to actually strike when least expected.

They wouldn't dare interfere with the Eurovision, would they?

I'm afraid I find all thse 'warnings' rather tedious, all they do is make people feel paranoid, maybe thats what they want.

Begining to think Orwell was right all along and that 1984 was a prediction not a novel.
