An 8.2 magnitude earthquake has struck in the sea off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake struck 125 miles west north west off Sibolga, Sumatra or 880 miles north west of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta at 5.09pm Irish time.

Warnings have been issued of possible tsunami.

Here's the details from the USGS website.
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsww/ ... usweax.htm

They say 8.7 which really is massive.
Have already found a news feed from the area of people taking cover.

Fingers crossed it doesn't have the same effect as the last one.

News came fast this time and people get warned about Tsunami. People have been told to wait another hour in Thailand before they can go back to their homes or hotels. It's horrified to see in the news pain and fear from people faces when they were evacuated in the middle of the night. We'll have to waite does the big wave come this time, and where. :-?

Yes the early warnings have so far done their job.

There was another Earthquake of 6.0 about half an hour after the main event to the SSE which might have been an after shock.

The APTN News feed keeps showing people after the evacuation. I'm sure if anything else happens then this will be one of the first to broadcast it.

I just can't figure out what kind of damage it'll make, when Californian coastline will someday have an earthquake?

Biggest damages has been from the earthquake itself on the landscape - any Tsunami's wasn't this time over there. That's sad, but we're still so small (we = human beings) and nature is so huge!

I think if the San Adreas fault ever produces the event that has been talked about for so long then the American coast line will change. Remember part of it has been reclaimed from the ocean so that the first area I think that would be at risk of disappearing.
There is the possiblity of an event so strong that nobody really knows its potiental but the predictions talk of an incredably large event stronger than what has previously been recorded. The largest since 1900 was 9.5 in Chile in May 1960. The Christmas event is listed as 9.0 by the USGS.

If man doesn't distroy itself then the Earth will have a dam good try .

Hmm, the event the 'doomsters' are waiting for in West coast america is called the 'Cascadia event'.
However, despite what 'some' may fear, Socal' is not going to fall into the sea, it'll be a real bad day for the locals - and the world's seventh largest economy.
