If I was going for the job of Prime Minister, this would be in my manifesto: Crime/Law and Order Tougher penalties for most crimes. At the moment penalties only deter law-abiding citizens. Prisons to be harsher but retain educational and rehabilitation roles. Inner-city prisons to be sold for development and new prisons to be built on out-of-town brown field sites (eg, old airfields). New laws introduced to tackle consumer-related misdemeanours. Greater power awarded to Trading Standards. Criminals to pay for any financial gain from crimes they have committed. There would be less concentration on inter-gang crime - this should free up more resources to concentrate on crime that affects ordinary people. More civilians would be employed to do detective work leaving PCs to be on the street. Education All schools to be funded by central government allowing schools to be treated equally across the country and not being dependant on their local authority's budget. Reform A Levels and introduce more college-style vocational qualifications (Diplomas). Academically-gifted students to be rewarded with A+ and A++ grades. Compulsory physical education to age 16 with teaching of basic nutrition, healthcare and personal fitness to improve the health of the population. Environment Higher targets for recycling. General refuse to be chipped and weighed and taxed if limits are exceeded. Tougher planning laws in enviromentally-sensitive areas. Bigger fines for companies that continue to pollute. Health Scrap all operations based on postcodes. More beds for more serious health issues. Pay for healthcare professionals to be raised by re-organising and reducing management levels. More subsidised local authority-run gymnasiums and tax breaks for businesses that promote healthy living and greater taxes on those that don't. Social Welfare Where appropriate replace benefits with vouchers (to work like a credit card to reduce social stigma) to be used solely for food and clothing (and not fags and beer). Greater powers to curb benefit fraud. Benefits to be frozen to couples who have more children whilst receiving benefits. Motoring Abolish car tax for fuel-efficient vehicles. Increase tax on non-eficient cars. All revenue from speed cameras and petrol to be invested in improving transport infrastructure and road safety. Compulsory driving tests every 5 years and introduction of 'good driving' advertising campaigns on TV. Local Government Abolish Council Tax and replace it with 2% Local Income Tax with a minimum element that everyone pays (£100) and capped to a maximum amount (£2000) for any individual. Replace all two-tier Local Authorities based on historic county boundaries and replace with single tier Unitary Authorities to reduce bureacracy and improve efficiency. Historic county boundaries maintained only for cultural reasons and sport. Immigration and asylum Genuine cases only allowed all those returned must be returned as quickly as possible. Non-asylum related immigrants not allowed access to Social benefits unless contributing through tax or have paid tax in other EU member states. Minimum wage laws to be applied only to UK citizens. Tax Increase tax duty on imports. Stamp Duty to be applied proportionately and not on the total value). Reduce Inheritance Tax. Increase tax on cigarettes. Tax breaks for businesses that promote healthy living and greater taxes on those that don't. See above for Council Tax. Increase personal allowance to encourage spending and saving. Introduce a new top rate of tax of 50% but based only on part of the income from £100k to £250k (after which it reverts back to 40%). Foreign Aid Interest repayments on world's poorest countries to be written off. All official aid to be channelled via 3rd-party aid agencies so that aid reaches the people that need it first. Phew, that's it I think. What do you reckon? |

Do I get your vote then Cat-woman? I forgot to mention that I would also reform the electoral process to introduce fairer democracy and streamline the royal family to retain only the core members. Everyone else can keep their titles but no income from state coffers. |

just think about it, I’m not saying we should be all the same, no only that we just stop actively highlighting the differences and calling for tolerance where the act of highlighting the difference is the cause of the intolerance in the first place I mean tolerating someone is to say they are doing something you don’t like but will begrudgingly put up with, which isn’t really accepting them at all is it. No .. I say if the fact someone has eight legs or purple skin is the same as having black or blonde hair we would have a workable society We don’t have the Blonds only Music awards do we or a minority commission for bald people. Mind you if we had a perfect society at all their wouldn’t be any French people.

That's great! This is my fifth year and second "season" (One season lasts 4 years and after that there are new election, so I've been elected twice already). I'm member of a Christian Democratic Party and I mainly stand for families and children with special care. That's what I've been doing almost "always" as a volunteer (since I was 14). My work is hectic as well, but I try to do my best to change things better - beginning with my town. |

I know what you mean now, I prob interpreted it incorrectly. I am someone from an 'ethnic minority' but I don't like the term and I know what you mean about highlighting the differences. For a start I don't like quotas, eg. there should be x black people or x disabled people in an organisation. Why can't people just be employed if they can do the job? I would also do away with terms such as WPC. We don't have Man Police Constables, we just have Police Constables so why have one highlighting the fact that one is a woman? Same with words like actor and actress. They're all actors in my opinion, we have female ones and male ones. And you're right, every time there's a major achievement by a black person, it's "so and so is the first black person..." first rather than concentrating on what they've achieved. It's common sense as opposed to being politically correct. |
