Thursday April 28 LONDON (Reuters) - Dog-lovers have taken 2.7 million working days off to care for their sick pets over the last two years, according to a survey on Thursday. Ten percent of owners missed five days of work, with half of these taking up to two weeks off to look after their pets. Dog owners are so concerned about their pooches' wellbeing that 55 percent admitted they paid more attention to sick pets than an ill partner. Fifty-three percent of owners also said they bought their dogs a present if their pets were feeling under the weather. The survey, for Direct Line Pet Insurance, polled 750 dog owners. |

These 750 people took 2.7 million days off between them? That's shocking!
Did these people take the days off as sick or annual leave? And has anyone added up how much the dog industry is worth to the British economy! |

I very rarely take sick leave (about one day every 6 years). So I should be grateful to be healthy. I did take a day off once to care for a stray dog - but I actually had a sore throat, because the stress of worrying over the dog got to me! And luckily for me, I got a really bad bout of vertigo during BB3, and had 4 days off to sit and watch Jade & Co. |

I broke my foot for three weeks right at the start of BB3... couldn't exactly more very far so got to spend a good part of each day watching spencer with his top off in the garden! mmmmm! I can understand people taking time off because pets really become like a family member don't they. Luckily Jack doesn't really get that ill so we've never had to. He had kennel cough once which was rather scary but when he first got it it was a saturday. |

ZOLLIE IS WEIGH TOO FAT One of Britain's fattest dogs has embarked on a health food diet. Zollie, a pedigree mastiff from Aberdeen, is combining a new dried pet food with herbal and homeopathic remedies after he tipped the scales at 22 stone. The hefty hound is one of the first dogs to take part in the holistic diet which features a recipe developed by Ayrshire entrepreneur George Burns. Zollie's owner, Elaine Knight, owns 24 Mastiffs but admitted the two-year-old is a one-off. "As a breeder I've seen a lot of dogs in my time but I've never owned one as big as Zollie," she said. "He just keeps piling on the pounds and getting bigger and bigger. "It would be great to see him leaner with less of a waist line." Mr Burns, founder of The Land of Holistic Pets, claims his specially-devised diet and remedies will make dogs healthier. "Scotland has long been recognised as the sick man of Europe," he said. "This also translates to many of our pets who not only devour the scraps from their owners' plates but also consume bottom-end-of-the-market pet foods that can cause health problems." The dried food, which is reconstituted from its natural state by simply adding hot water, contains carbohydrates, vegetables, proteins, fats, herbs, vitamins, minerals and seaweed. SKY |
