London's historic Tower Bridge has jammed open as boats passed underneath, causing major traffic problems in the heart of the capital.

Engineers are continuing to battle to correct the problem, which happened as the bascules - or arms - were raised at around 1.40pm

The famous 1894 bridge was swung open but later failed to close properly, meaning traffic cannot pass over the surface.

"We swung the bascules open again in an attempt to correct the problem, but it appears there is a software malfunction," said a spokesman for the Corporation of London.

"Traffic is being diverted to Southwark Bridge and London Bridge and pedestrians are using alternative routes."

Transport for London (TfL) said it will suspend repairs on the south-bound stretch of the Blackwall Tunnel, planned for tonight, to ease congestion.

"There are problems for motorists, but those who are diverted from Tower Bridge into the congestion charge zone will not have to pay," said a TfL spokesman.

It is hoped that the bridge, which currently has the bascules raised, will be restored to working order by tomorrow morning.

What do they mean the software playing up... the basicules are so well balanced that original its just a engine with the power of a moped that opens and closes them.

despite appeances the bridge is a iron frame construction with a brick facia ,,, i wonder if they have reopened the upper level pedestrian bridge as was its designed to allow foot crossers when the main bridge was open .. i used to work near Tower bridge and know every inch of it :D
