Hmm. I did that from age 10-14. I taught myself Meteorology/Climatology...self taught myself in GCSE Meterology when I was 16 (was practically the only student in s.e england doing that unusual course).

Ended up taking work experience at the Met Office in bracknell at 17 - which I arranged myself - even though I'd never really been away from home before. Found a distant relative who lived nearby.. - stayed with them....and that was that. 2 weeks hanging out with the head forecasters - during...none other than the 'burns days' storm of Jan 1990. Very good timing !

As you may be aware, we're now in a new cycle of 25-35 years of much higher storm frequency. Those along Florida/gulf coast really just going to have to accept that they are going to get their homes smashed to pieces a lot more often now until at least 2020.

well 'later'? The centre of the storm hits the coast at about 8-10pm tonight. winds currently gusting 135mph, pressure 930, storm moving NNW 18mph. However, the storm is only 40miles wide, - relatively small, so the path of destruction won't be too bad for the locals. Coverage on that TV channel has so far been great, although it might go offline later....if their ISP gets whacked !

cheers for that Carlrissian, just put it on and the quality is not too bad. So far it looks very wet. This is very early in the season for a hurricane!

its a pretty good feed indeed. --- one special note on the main weather forecaster they have on... he looks utterly terrified to be on TV ! He is literally shaking to pieces, his voice is all over the place, and its almost painful to watch this guy in action. Dennis is about to whack the US hard. If you reduce the size of the player, then the quality gets better. Trouble is, when you reduce the size of the player, you can't really see that much

Ooh....never found this site before and I thought I was a weather nerd! It is indeed very early Westy.The oceans must be warmer than usual.Think the pressure is still falling at the epicentre though so it's gonna be pretty potent when it hits

I'm ultra weather freak. If you think I'm something of a BB fan, then that pales compared to my weather interest. *yes, its very early in the season for a storm of this strength. Although its not surprise though, since the SST (surface sea temps) are way above normal, and thus able to fuel such strong storms. Should be a busy hurricane season. 4 storms already, and it ain't even August !

Last time was so early was 1977 was it not?And the year before had been exceptionally warm in the Northern hemisphere. OK...just call me Eugene!
