Former Northern Ireland Secretary Mo Mowlam is critically ill in hospital. The former-Redcar MP is described as being in a "critical but stable" condition in London's King College Hospital.Ms Mowlam, 55, suffered a brain tumour in the late 1990s but her health has deteriorated in recent months.
She gained huge respect from the public for the courage she showed fighting the brain tumour and losing her hair.
She was Northern Ireland Secretary from 1997 to 1999.
She won admiration for her perseverance in working towards the Good Friday peace agreement, while recovering from treatment for the tumour.
Renowned for her light-hearted disregard for formality, she kicked off her shoes and chewed gum at meetings.
She is also reputed to have taken off her wig to break the tension during key meetings and called Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness "babe" during a phone conversation.
In 1998 she entered the infamous Maze Prison to talk to convicted paramilitaries when it became clear the peace process needed their backing.
She quit politics at the 2001 General Election after becoming increasingly disenchanted with the government.
She said it was "harder and harder to defend what the Labour Government is doing".
In 1995 she married Labour-supporting merchant banker Jon Norton, already a father-of-two.
