Graduates will be in debt to the Government until at least their mid-30s once new university tuition fees are brought in, education officials have conceded.

They estimate that the average student would face a "likely repayment period of 13-15 years" after leaving higher education.

That is twice the present seven-year pay-off period calculated by the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

And the average level of debt, following the introduction of the annual fees of up to £3,000, would rise by around two-thirds to £15,000, the officials said.

Under the controversial new system, which only survived a Labour backbench rebellion by five votes, graduates begin to pay back the fees once they are earning £15,000 a year rather than having to pay them up front.

Around 400,000 students from poorer families will benefit from grants and bursaries to help cover the costs, and any unpaid debt will be written off after 25 years.

But reports in both the Daily Mail and The Times, predict that graduates will in fact face spending even more of their working life paying for their studies.

They said high street banks were predicting average debts of up to £20,000 by 2009 as students turned to them to top up the low-interest loans available from the state.

whilst I think some students could save a lot more by working to pay for their social lives this government seems intent on squeezing every last penny out of everyone and anyone that works (the 'oh, let's just bill the consumer' attitude). It seems odd, that future high-taxpayers are targetted but if you're a pregnant teenager stupid enough to get yourself pregnant when you can't afford to you can get all the help from the state you need. education is an investment.

Hard to believe that when I was a working student we somehow managed to actually save enough money for a deposit on a flat when we graduated.God knows when my children will be able to envisage owning their own place as the average price of a 2 bedroom terrace here in over £200,000!

if you were a student round about the same time as me you probably got a grant. if you didn't it meant your parents were rich enough to afford your education. I got a full grant as we had no money. I also qualified for housing benefit in my first year - just as well as Oxford is a bloody expensive place to rent.

some students can still qualify for grants (the amount depending on a sliding scale if the total household income is less than £32k?). some students don't help themselves though, the grant/loan is meant to go towards essentials such as fees, accomodation, food, and educational materials such as books and equipment not loads of CDs, drinking sessions, designer clothes and cars.

my advice to anyone wanting to go to uni is to take a gap year and get at least a year's worth of working experience so when you do go to uni you are more focussed on what you need to get out of it and your earnings can subsidise your lifestyle.
