I can't comment on commercial companies or their motives...but the lab staff I know and work with in the health service are not animal haters even thought they use reagents which may have been tested or more likely raised by use of animals specifically bred for the purpose.I worked with my fair share of animal lovers and animal indifferents, vegetarians, ethical shoppers,etc....it's just not as simple as finding alternative methods to animal use for testing..at some point humans must be used to carry out trials but imagine the outcry had the product not been made as safe as possible prior to use.I'm not discussing make up here..as thats another issue...
This is something I've thought long and hard abour professionally and personally over the years and I know its a very emotive subject..but I do object to the reference to lab staff who try to advance care methods as tantamount to 'playing God' because it isn't. :-?

Any animal that is capable of a maternal instinct is inedible imo. I saw a lamb once raise its back leg to scratch behind it's ear and it's mother looked a little concerned and she lowered her own head to kiss/nuzzle the top of it head and I just melted with total compassion as it bounced off to play and it's mum watched it go. If I did eat meat it would be only insects... Never seen an earwig do that! ::lol::

Well even if I disagree with you on lab testing Pikey, I respect you and I know where you're coming from and I'm glad we are still friends! :D

These animal rights activists just remind me of the BNP thugs out there. They walk around with their balaclava's on, and they destroy whatever catches their eye. They have absolutely no idea of how to fight properly and sensibly, or even how to go about doing it in the right way. They just shove on a mask or whatever, and they go hurling bricks or whatever they do, and that's their mission complete

Oh don't get me started on them zx! I had a taxi-driver this morning tell me that the P*ki's want to take over the world and saying that they want to 'get white girls pregnant' to make 'more Muslims'. I bit my lip so hard I was shaking with anger and I didn't answer. I just rang my bf and talked in Hindi to let him know that I thought he was a pig! The taxi driver that is, not my lovely Indian bf! @^@ *actually now I think of it he prob wouldn't know Hindi from Arabic, Dutch or Swahili - funny how racists are never intelligent isn't it...?

About the subject of "it's not right to eat animals". I wonder what the cavemen in their day resorted to eating?? I bet they killed whatever animal was in their sights, just to have a proper meal. I'm not trying to turn anyone back onto meat though, i'm just saying that people haven't just been killing animals over the last 2 centuries. This has probably been happening since man has walked the earth. I have seen a few websites that have said animals are not ours to eat, i would like them to think about what i have just said, about man killing animals for food.

Well Zx, if I had to eat meat to live then maybe I would. I'm lucky to have never faced that choice. As I have the choice I choose not to do something that creates pain and suffering. I don't know what I'd do if it was a life decision. As it is it's unnecessary for me to cause pain to live so I won't. :D

I think ignoring someone's comment, can have just as much impact as telling them what you think of them. No doubt he just shut up straight away, or was he just arrogant and kept on slagging them off. There are people out there that say all this racist crap, and really, they haven't got a clue about what they are talking about. They go on about how they are taking our jobs, and how they are scrounging, this that and the other. They basically can't win. If they are scrounging, they get called for that, if they have a job and are hard working, then they get called for nicking our jobs. Me thinks some people just want an excuse to go slagging them off. If this nation ever gets into the state of some countries, lets see who asks for asylum first ;)

Well said Zx! my favourite quote of the year goes to a young newbie who basically said we should be grateful for our loved ones bcz nobody lives forever but both alanlapin and jimd do good ones too! This one tho, yes, yes and yes! The poor boogers can't win! They're either nicking our jobs or scrounging off the system! Damned if you do and .... well y'know. Well said mate! ()^

Weeeeeeeelll, it's just something i keep thinking of whenever i hear racist comments, or simply someone slagging people like them off. I suppose you'll always get people who hate them, and basically just have tunnel vision. I'm prepared to give everybody a chance, until they muck it up, but not everybody is like this though

You do have to stand up for what you belive is right ..true enough...but it doesn't entitle somebody to ride roughshod over decent folk trying to do their best.At the end of the day I believe we all work together for a common decency.....and most of us genuinely do.Life is a big enough struggle without those that seek to undermine the commonalities we all have. There's enough antagonism, enough stirrers, idiots and thugs out there without any of us having to resort to thuggery instead of discourse....

After all....isn't this how we are supposedly better than animals.... :-?
