I enjoyed NASA TV and this Hurricane has been also interesting, news are much more fresher this way than from Finnish News agencies. I have noticed that I have heard certain news from here at least day before than they are published anywhere over here! ;)

Seems like the worst is over but the storm is now heading inland and looks as if it will last a few more days.

The latest report from Reuters

Katrina slams U.S. Gulf Coast, oil rigs adrift
Mon Aug 29, 2005 9:28 PM BST
By Rick Wilking

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Hurricane Katrina ripped into the U.S. Gulf Coast on Monday, battering the historic jazz city New Orleans, swamping resort towns and lowlands with a crushing surge of seawater and stranding people on rooftops.

New Orleans, a bowl-shaped city that sits below sea level and has long feared catastrophic damage from a massive hurricane, took a powerful blow from Katrina's 135 mph (216 kph) winds when the storm came ashore from the Gulf of Mexico and roared along the coast into Mississippi and Alabama.

At least two oil rigs were adrift in the Gulf of Mexico, where Katrina raged through offshore fields as one of the strongest hurricanes on record. Fearing the worst from the 175 mph (280 kph) winds, oil companies shut down rigs and closed refineries along the coast, sending oil futures higher.

Katrina could become the most expensive storm in U.S. history, costing insurers up to $26 billion (14.5 billion), risk analysts said.

New Orleans was one of the 'big news stories' that many - myself included have been waiting for - every single day, since the 1990s. Today, New Orleans got lucky. The city survived...by no more than 50-75 miles - 0.6 degrees of longitude. Were Katrina just a tiny bit more to the west, and had it kept a little more of its earlier strength...the city would have been obliterated, along with 125,000 residents.
-----------

*in case you wonder, the other stories that the net-heads are carefully (and endlessly) monitoring....

-severe volcanism
-terrorism - multiple nuke attack on USA homeland
-bird flu, mass global pandemic
-asteroid impact
-computers reaching the 'singularity point' of exponential intelligence (2035-2045)
-Davina's continuing decline in interviewing skills

(okay, I'm joking about the last one)

I'll be sure to post the links when such stories further develop :D

aye, thats something people don't think about.

thousands of crocs....millions of fire ants....thousands of litres of toxic chemicals.....hundreds of tonnes of broken glass, fires... - all the fires right now !

Seeing that person rescued earlier by the coastguard in the middle of the city, was amazing!
