Good grief, I hope he's found in one piece, the same I hope for everyone else missing at the moment.

the really useful 'blog'...

re: Death toll.

The current 'highest' rumour on the net is 45,000-450,000. That certainly seems a bit crazy - although if you read the original article, the numbers are not entirely out of bound.

I'd raise my initial total from 5000 to around 15000...with a 'possible' of 45000. It would seem that as many as 25% of the locals decided to ride out the storm in New Orleans...and when those canals broke...they were truly stuck - most can't swim I've read. Even the ones who have survived are not dying of thirst.

As anyone who has watched the WKRG or WWL net feeds...hundreds...thousands are right now...dying of thirst on the freeway...a few miles from the 'superdome'.

No one is sending water drops to the roads where those people are. A lot of 'survivors' tonight will die..due to lack of water.

And as the dead bodies decompose things can only get worse :-? The river is a sea of raw effluent ...the very least anyone will get from not treating it before use is an upset stomach, but cholera and typhoid will soon be rife :-?
Rats in the water carry the potentiall fatal Wiels disease....the hospital is set to close as has no water or air con atm...and patients will be treated on a navy hospital boat in the river....:(.....It may be the US of A but these poor souls are living in 3rd world conditions. The death toll could easily rise to 50,000.It's absolutely heartbreaking

coverage on WKRG...

"there are 15,000 people 'stranded' at the convention centre in New Orleans, people are being beaten, raped..."

We're not talking about the 'superdome', this is another place!
*earlier the estimate was 2000 in that little place, yet its clearly spiralling into a hell on earth. None of those 15k have food, water, anything.
They're all dying.

They also said they sent in police/national guard, but they were beaten back from the place by 'mobs'. Damn it, they should send in Marines, not some weekend part timers who liked holding a gun.

It's a survival mentality.FFS lets not insult the 3rd world...this is back to stone age behaviour :-?
These people realise they have lost everything and have nothing left to lose...:(
You can call me all the bleeding heart mentalities you want but this is a horrendous tragedy where every human being involved would see all their defences of social niceties destroyed. Its now about surviving.Grab what you can.Survive as long as you can.Your world has been destroyed.Take what you can.run.move on.
I cannot imagine their desperation.....but sometimes we observing need to reflect and not react :-?

Its law of the jungle down there...yet there is no excuse for utter theft, rape, and shooting at the rescuers.

Send in the Marines...with guns blazing at the 'troublemakers'.

Its Martial Law...so 'human rights' no longer exist in the New Orleans area. Its an anything goes place for the Military. I really hope the military go in there hard. If they can't control a few hundred nuts with guns (mostly stolen from the local Walmarts - ohh the irony), then they might as well disband the USA army.

(CNN) -- Rock 'n' roll pioneer Fats Domino was among the thousands of New Orleans residents plucked from rising floodwaters, his daughter said Thursday.

Karen Domino White, who lives in New Jersey, identified her father in a picture taken Monday night by a New Orleans Times-Picayune photographer.

The photograph shows Domino -- the singer behind the 1950s hits "Ain't That a Shame" and "Blueberry Hill" -- being helped off a boat near his home in the city's Lower 9th Ward.

His whereabouts since the rescue were not immediately known. Nor was there any information about his wife, Rosemary, friends said.

The neighborhood was heavily flooded when a levee failed as Katrina slammed into southeastern Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Thousands are feared dead in the storm, Louisiana's governor and the mayor of New Orleans have said, though no official tally has been compiled.

White said she last heard from her father August 23, four days before the storm hit, and was unable to contact him Sunday.

"I didn't have any information. I was just praying," she said.

Writer Charles Amann said he last spoke to Domino on Sunday, and the singer refused to join the evacuation that was then under way.

"He said to me, in that wonderful Southern accent of his, that no, he was staying on -- that he had gone through the last one and he could go through this one," said Amann, who is working on a book on the early days of the "American Bandstand" television program.

Many of those evacuated from the Lower 9th Ward were taken to the Louisiana Superdome and are being transferred to the Astrodome sports stadium in Houston, Texas.

Alan Warner, an EMI Music executive, also saw the photograph of Domino's rescue. But he said he did not know where the 77-year-old singer, born Antoine Domino, was taken afterward.

"But the fact that he actually was rescued is just so gratifying," Warner said. CNN

Has anyone else seen 'Hardy Jackson' ?

The interview by Jennifer Maverle...who met Hardy is one of the most :-( things I've ever seen. Fortunately though, everyone knows this guy now, and hopefully he'll start receiving funds for him and his children in the weeks ahead.

Right now...Friday...tens of thousands have not eaten/drunk anything since Monday.

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) -

A mighty explosion rattled the outskirts of New Orleans and the ruined city's frayed nerves on Friday as U.S. troops finally headed towards the region in a federal aid effort that the mayor said was a disaster unto itself.

Police locked themselves in their own headquarters in fear of the spreading anarchy as looters, shooters and gangs roamed the streets thrown into chaos

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin blasted the federal government as emotions spilt over in an angry radio interview, saying he was "pissed" at the lack of help the historic city had received.

"I need reinforcements. I need troops, man. I need 500 buses, man," he said. "Now get off your asses and fix this. Let's do something and let's fix the biggest goddam crisis in the history of this country."

"We authorized $8 billion to go to Iraq, lickety split. After 9/11 we gave the president unauthorized powers, lickety split to help New York and other places," he said. "You mean to tell me that a place where most of your oil is coming through ... that we can't figure out a way to authorize the resources that we need," said Nagin.

"I keep hearing this is coming, that is coming. My answer to that is BS. Where is the beef? There is no beef in this city," he said.

"People are dying, people have lost their homes, people have lost their jobs. The city of New Orleans will never be the same."

U.S. Sen. David Vitter said FEMA's efforts to deal with the hurricane have been completely ineffective, and he called the federal government's response a failure.

"I think FEMA has been completely dysfunctional and is completely overwhelmed, and I don't know why. This situation was utterly predictable," said Vitter, R-Metairie. "It seems like there was no coherent plan, which I don't understand because this precise scenario has been predicted for 20 years," he said.

He has a point...

I've read many thousands of pages of stuff in the past week. I've read some crazy stuff with rumours of 400,000 dead, then there was the even more crazy claims by the media on day'3 of just '150 dead'.

This is the most bizarre news event of all time.
An event for which I have articles on, EVERYTHING that happened this week was predicted. All the roof top rescues, the rioting, the street mayhem.

FEMA failed. Not surprising though. Most govt. agencies suck. Only now that we have a 3 Star Army General - who is literally screaming orders at the thousands of grunts, is the situation really improving.
---

There are probably 35,000 people at the conference centre, they'll be there until next week....which all things considered is a travesty for the American people.

-----
Over the next year or so, the secondary issue will be whether any of those in authority will be held to account for many of the needless deaths. Even the major of New Orleans has something to answer for. he had hundreds of buses...all of which were left to be flooded during the storm.

A truly sorry mess.

You can bet that if George Bush's relative's homes had been struck by this hurricane, he'd be moving heaven and earth to get their lives back to the way it was before.
