They should regulate Newsgroups as well. If fact I thought a few years ago that something was put into place to force the ISPs to control the content ,but last year I had to report someone for posting child porn in a Newsgroup hosted by NTL. NTL said that it's better to report stuff to another site though they did accept my complaint as valid.
Other hosts still list groups which by the titles would be expected to contain sick material.
And you have to be so care when using software to collect files from Newsgroups as they don't always display the actual title so you could so easily get more than you bargined for. And if you do find you have mistakenly downloaded something like that ,the very fact that you have downloaded it could potentially get you into trouble and there are very few programs that can completely remove the traces of the file so it can't be found later if for some reason you did come under suspiction.
There is a way with JPG images where it is possible to embed program code. It was said a fews years ago that with the cooperation of Microsoft that this could be used to get images to report information from someone that had downloaded it. Now with the patches that were in the Windows updates a few monthes back either someone has tried to exploit this or the means have been embeded to collecxt the information.
In the early days ISPs didn't respond to reports ,a report I filed back into 1997 never got any response.
With the best ideas in place there will always be the underground sites for most things but if they can prevent easy and / or acciedental access then it's a good thing.
Bit like a virus you mean, once you have downloaded the whole thing, then it starts automatically, even without you having to double click on it.
