My computer is connected to the internet through the ethernet port, i.e LAN. Like it has already been said, may or may not connect to the internet. Your IP address gets sent off to the websites so they know where to send the info back to.

did you learn anything in your HNC, Molly!

Yes ya booga! Networking was my only talent! Carrier Sense is looking out for the 'carrier wave' and CSMAD ends the transition as soon as a collision is detected, Carrier sense multiple access with collision detection ends the transmission as soon as the collision is detected the other one avoids it! Carrier Sense multiple access collison avoidance - is prevention rather than cure! Sends it to the right recipitent whenever possible! I'm not stupid! :-(
Molly: feeling a little sensitive today  :-(

They should regulate Newsgroups as well. If fact I thought a few years ago that something was put into place to force the ISPs to control the content ,but last year I had to report someone for posting child porn in a Newsgroup hosted by NTL. NTL said that it's better to report stuff to another site though they did accept my complaint as valid.
Other hosts still list groups which by the titles would be expected to contain sick material.
And you have to be so care when using software to collect files from Newsgroups as they don't always display the actual title so you could so easily get more than you bargined for. And if you do find you have mistakenly downloaded something like that ,the very fact that you have downloaded it could potentially get you into trouble and there are very few programs that can completely remove the traces of the file so it can't be found later if for some reason you did come under suspiction.

There is a way with JPG images where it is possible to embed program code. It was said a fews years ago that with the cooperation of Microsoft that this could be used to get images to report information from someone that had downloaded it. Now with the patches that were in the Windows updates a few monthes back either someone has tried to exploit this or the means have been embeded to collecxt the information.

In the early days ISPs didn't respond to reports ,a report I filed back into 1997 never got any response.

With the best ideas in place there will always be the underground sites for most things but if they can prevent easy and / or acciedental access then it's a good thing.

Bit like a virus you mean, once you have downloaded the whole thing, then it starts automatically, even without you having to double click on it.

The possibilty exists for a graphic program to look for embeded code within the image and report the details of the computer and user details.
When I first started with internet in 96 the software etc was about for Linux type systems and there was a long discussion in one of the Hacker newsgroups by someone who's job was to find wholes in the operating systems and report them for security purposes. And this use was agreed as very useful by everybody taking part. So when Microsoft etc started issuing patches for possible GUI breeches I did wonder IF it was really someone trying to use this technology for melisious means or whether Microsoft and the secutiry services had decided to do something useful for a change.
So as soon as the image is viewed the user details could be forwarded to an enforcement agency. Now I'm not sure how they get around the firewall issue or if they would also have to look for the co-opperation of the software houses creating the firewalls to let the traffic through. Not sure if Microsoft could at the point of creating the Thumbnails access the could thus doing everything through their own software but if they could then the file need never be opened which could in itself open a new can of worms. Think it's safer to gather the info when someone opens the file.

But you'd have to go further than Image file these days to cover video files which would mean even more software houses getting involved to create the system. Nothing is every easy.

Firewalls aren't 100% bug free, all it needs is someone to find a vunerablity in the firewall, and that's it, your in, or out as in this case. If you can get past a firewall going in, then all you would probably have to do, is use the same technique going out of the system, maybe with a little change to it. One firewall i don't like is zone alarm pro, this freezes the icon's actions on this site, or any other site like it. But anyway, as for the JPEG's, like i said, whatever it takes to get in, maybe use the same to get out, but maybe with a little change.

With Zonealarm pro there is a setting to stop animation. Look in the Privacy settings . Then click on Custom next to ad blocking there is a setting for blocking animated ads which I think also stops GIFs regardless of it's ad status.
I have ad blocking turned off and use other software to take care of them as it gives more user control.
