well, here we go again.

Despite Philippe having formed a day earlier, 'Rita' has developed to the east of Florida and is now targetting the Keys'.

Primary link...

http://www.cbs4.com/

*please note, only 'internet exploror' web browser will allow you to load up the live stream. The lousy webmaster/designer on that site doesn't seem to care much for Firefox.
----
Coverage is good, 24/7, and there should be some fascinating viewing of the storm over the next few days.

--
Where is Rita heading?
No one is really sure, currently heading due west, but will probably turn more northwards in the Gulf. A smash into Houston, Texas as a Cat3/4 is a distinct fear at present**

**yes, thats the place where the Astrodome is located, home to a fair few thousand evacuees from New Orleans.

Many thanks Cal, the link worked first time.

This paragraph looks pretty ominous:

Rita's immediate threat appeared to be Florida, but rough projections of the 65-mph storm's track for the end of the week shifted farther north, putting New Orleans and other Gulf Coast locations in danger of a follow-up pummeling less than a month after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area.

That will really put FEMA under REAL PREASURE

Sep 21, 2005 — NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hurricane Rita strengthened into a Category 5 storm on Wednesday as it headed for the Texas coast later this week, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in its latest update.

The storm, packing winds of 165 mph, was projected to make landfall on Saturday after threatening oil and natural gas facilities in the Gulf Coast region.

yep, best to stick to the KHOU TV station.
Great feed, you also get to see the weird USA adverts, and it doesn't 'time out' every 20 mins' like the other net feeds tend to do.
----
meanwhile, Rita is now gusting 200+mph, 900mb.

A beast !

err, not sure.
I would say no.
---
even after 'rita' is done with, it is likely there will be at least 1 more cat'3 landfall someplace this year in the USA, which would really be a major late Autumn kick in the guts for the US.

Mother nature's doing it's dam best to tell George to stop burning more fossil fuels. It will only be when George goes on American TV with a pained earnest expression on his face and tell's us all, we have to stop burning oils, and our scientists are going to have to come up with some pretty great break throughs in alternative power, with big pink pigs seen flapping over the White House. Will anything get done :-? someone should tell em as well, that they'll be able to tell the arabs to get stuffed as well, not have anything to do with them anymore, which is what they want anyway, and they can go back to doing nothing, Oh except killing each other over religion, missed that out, no change there then. Also maybe using flying carpets that don't need any sort of fossil fuels at all. :roll: I'm sure George will go for all that ${

Rita heading for Galveston (sorta).
---
As for global warmning. Its not a good idea to link any particular weather event to the theory of global warming. Its too late anyway, the Tundra is melting, more methane than any amount of human C02 production for 10,000 years.
---

*what is not currently well known, is that the storm will probably stall over Texas...where it will then dump 2-4 feet of rain - and maybe 1ft for New Orleans (in which case the levees might break). Some models even suggest the storm might end up moving back towards the Gulf.

Rita could well be trouble way into next week.

ohh great... a few inches of rain...and the New Orleans levee has broke in at least one place. Neighbourhoods are rapidly flooding again.
---
Rita continues to storm towards the houston/gal' area.
2-3 feet of rain
storm surge 10-25ft +waves of 5-20 ft in places.

*Tropical Storm Philippe is lurking (still) east of Florida, and is kinda drifting westwards and due to merge with a small low.

Complex situation.
