this may be a REALLY stupid question, but where do the names come from? who makes them up? *this is something I've always wondered since childhood* |

For some reason I've always thought it goes down the alphabet and they just come up with a girls name that works with the letter but knowing me that likely came in a dream...! |

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml ----- The world Met' people sit down at a table each year and vote on names. 1. names alternate between male/female. 2. any named storm that was 'serious' is permanently removed and replaced. 3. only 21 names are used, no I, Q, U, Z, Y storm names. if more than 21 storms in a year (never happened), they use greek alphabet, alpha, beta, gamma... --- Cal: bed. |

They used only girls names up until winter 1977. Hurricane 'bob' in summer 1978 was the first 'guy' storm. --- So, if you're old enough, it wasn't a dream. Calrissian: has got the XY factor |

The storm has now been downgraded to a Cat 1 so it looks as if the worst is over. Looking at the wind speeds it is now just 'A Wee bit Windy' as they used to say in South Uist

I've thought that for years, it's pretty weird. Many things from my childhood are kind of strange - was going to say one there but it's a bit funny |
