this may be a REALLY stupid question, but where do the names come from? who makes them up?

*this is something I've always wondered since childhood*

For some reason I've always thought it goes down the alphabet and they just come up with a girls name that works with the letter but knowing me that likely came in a dream...!

The world Met' people sit down at a table each year and vote on names.

1. names alternate between male/female.
2. any named storm that was 'serious' is permanently removed and replaced.
3. only 21 names are used, no I, Q, U, Z, Y storm names.

if more than 21 storms in a year (never happened), they use greek alphabet, alpha, beta, gamma...

Cal: bed.

They used only girls names up until winter 1977.

Hurricane 'bob' in summer 1978 was the first 'guy' storm.

So, if you're old enough, it wasn't a dream.

The storm has now been downgraded to a Cat 1 so it looks as if the worst is over.

Looking at the wind speeds it is now just 'A Wee bit Windy' as they used to say in South Uist ::lol:: ::lol:: ::lol::

No I'm not old enough. I've thought that for years, it's pretty weird.

Many things from my childhood are kind of strange - was going to say one there but it's a bit funny :-? I blame my father!!
