Some teachers reckon they can tell whether you're going to be naughty or nice by just looking at your name. They've been chatting on a teachers' website about how they look at their register and try to work out what type of behaviour goes with which name. Some teachers say Jordan, Bobbi-Jo, Ryan and Kristopher spell trouble. But they reckon kids called Kate, Imran, Daniel and Lucy are generally well-behaved. One teacher reckoned he was 75% right with his guesses. But some names appeared on both lists, proving that teachers have different experiences with kids who have the same name. Some parents are annoyed by what the teachers have been doing, saying it's not fair to judge kids before you have met them. From the .BBC |

I read this the other day (cant remember which paper it was in), but doesn't the whole thing hold kids back because of their names? It's disgraceful that teachers can single out someone just because of their name. |

Names used to have certain meanings or certain history. When we decided names to our children, I have always wanted to know the meaning of their names before deciding their real names permanently. And I'm a person that can't decide a name to a unborn child - I must see him or her and his or hers natural temperament alive and then trust to my intuition, which name suits him or her. But we have a saying over here: 'Name doesn't make a person bad if the person doesn't make the name.' I think that it's out of their profession (a teacher) to make any judgements by someones name. |

True that parents give their kids the name they want. But the article that Jim gave us implicates stupidity in that youth and that some people pick up on it. In this case it's teachers. If either you,or me, had one of those names it would mean that our education (in this country, UK) would be less because w would be descriminated against by the teachers who helped make that list. Would Einstein have got where he did with "Bernice" as his name, or would he have just got laughed back into history? |

Yes, I don't think that can honestly be true. I can see how if you've a bad experience with somebody with a certain name then you may think of them when the name is mentioned but you can't really expect the other person to be like them because of what their parents called them.

From the .BBC Jordan...definitely....I'd add Jake to the list too..and every Daniel(as opposed to shortening it to Dan) has been a nightmare

Well I've known a Jordan, Daniel AND Jake who've been anything but trouble!! OK I'm not actually a teacher but from the various extra things I've done I can recall kids with those names that did behave. |

It's a kind of joke with us....You know,oh crikey...not another Daniel!!But we tend to look at surnames more than anything else...This is a small vilage so we can get an idea of what a child may be like from his family history.Its not always the case...but we know there are some families we dont have cat in hells chance of getting any back up. |

Loads of the boys up here seem to be called Callum or Lewis, the younger ones especially. When I did work experience FOUR children in one of the classes were all called Lewis, it's very confusing. Other than one thing I go to I'm the only Jessica so I hate it when there's another one as it totally confuses me
