| Post subject: | Bono and Geldof might get this years Nobel Peace Prize |
Rockers on peace prize shortlist Rock superstars Bono and Bob Geldof are awaiting the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize after being named among the top contenders. Commentators have placed the Irish pair high on the shortlist to scoop the prestigious prize. The outspoken musicians are believed to be ranked on the secretive shortlist alongside other candidates including campaigners against nuclear arms and a peace broker for Indonesia. They are believed to have been nominated for the award for peace for their lengthy campaigns to ease hunger and poverty in Africa. Former Boomtown Rats singer Geldof was among 37 people selected by Time magazine as its 2005 European Heroes for organising the Live 8 concerts, and joining forces with U2's Bono to call on people to march on the G8 summit. But the International Atomic Energy Agency, which is led by Dr Mohamed ElBaradei, is favourite to take this year's award. Ananova |

| Post subject: | ElBaradei welcomes Nobel 'boost' |
Friday, 7 October 2005, 20:52 GMT 21:52 UK UN nuclear agency director and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei has said the award will give him and his organisation a "shot in the arm". Mr ElBaradei said the peace prize would act as a spur to tackle nuclear crises in Iran and North Korea. The award was given jointly to Mr ElBaradei and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which he heads. He was congratulated by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, whose country opposed his re-appointment. Ms Rice said the Bush administration was committed to working with the IAEA to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons technology. Washington has previously criticised Mr ElBaradei for being too soft on Iran, and opposed him when he stood for a third term as head of the agency in September. The complaint was later withdrawn.
