hmmm.
Clearly, I need to stock up for the winter. Then again, we get a yearly 'ohh noooo, its gonna be such a cold winter' every October. Its now an annual event for the Met Office.

I remember a winter I think in the 80s where after a period of heavy rain a large almost static area of high pressure took over during Feb staying for something like 6 weeks during which you were lucky if the daytime high was -10C.

I have childhood photos of the winter of 84-85 being very snowy. At the time the roof of our house was off and was covered by a tarpaulin. I don't remember much except for the tobogganing etc. Perhaps it was then?

Yeah there were definitely 2 or 3 winters in the mid 80's that were snowy down here too..About a dozen of us used to take a sheet of plastic up the local hill- all pile on and break bones :D

Oh what joy :D

Based on Met Office data from the last 10 years the average temperatures for December ,Janurary ,and Febrary for England and Wales were 4.44C ,4.74C ,and 5.43C.

For the last 25 years these averages were
4.86C ,3.94C ,and 4.20C.

Now bearing these figures in mind of those months whose avaerage temperatures have reached or exceeded 6C December and February have the most listings. Decemeber has 6 with 1988 ,1992 ,and 1995 exceeding 7C. 1995 was 7.4C. January only has 2 listings ,1983 and 1990. While February has 5 listings ,1990 ,1995 ,1997 ,1998 ,and 2002. Warmest being 1990 reaching an average of 7.0C.

Also interestingly the warmest year since 1914 was 1990 with an average annual temperature of 10.25C followed by 2002 (10.23) and 1999 (10.21). In fact since 1989 there has been 8 years with average annual temperatures over 10C. Before 1989 the only other times since 1914 that England and Wales have had Annual Averages over 10C were 1921 (10.07C) and 1949 (10.11C).

But it does show our climate is getting warmer. In fact the warmest period taking the data in 10 year blocks starting with 1914 was 1994 to 2003 with Annual average of 9.8C which is second only to 1944 to 1953 that was 9.278C.

To add to this every 10 year block from 1954 has gotten warmer.
1954 to 1963 and 1963 to 1973 were only 0.018C warmer and 1974 to 1983 were only 0.13C warmer and 1984 to 1993 were 0.141C but 1994 to 2003 were 0.632C warmer which in the real terms is a massive increase.

Most warm periods are normally followed by a couple of cold spells that bring the average temperatures back down but it'll take a quite a few very cold Winters to counter the current trend.

Data was provided by the Met Office off their website and covers England and Wales from Jan 1914 to Sept 2005.

Ok you can all wake up now !
I was bored and got carried away.

Have to say that when you start getting lots of numbers quoted like this it starts to sound like something you hear in the budget which when most switch off.
