But now you can actually visit the place after Ordnance Survey (OS) map makers have found the exact centre of the country. The metre-square patch of land lies in Lancashire in the heart of the Ribble Valley, on a sheep farm. OS experts used satellites to find the spot at grid reference SD64188.3, 56541.43 - if you want to take a trip. Jeff Walker, who runs the sheep farm, said tourists are always asking him where the centre of Britain is, and now he can give them precise directions. Up-market department store Harrods is giving away the chance to own the 'heart' of Britain for one year. One competition hopeful could be the Queen, who once said the region was so beautiful she would like to retire there. |
