A police officer terrified staff at the US Embassy in London when he accidentally fired his weapon while on guard duty.
Staff called 999 when the officer, from The Diplomatic Protection Squad, discharged his sub-machine gun on Friday morning in Mayfair.
A Metropolitan police spokeswoman said: "At 11.20am yesterday a static armed protection officer unintentionally discharged a firearm in Grosvenor Square. No one was injured."
The officer has been suspended from firearms duties while an internal inquiry is carried out by the Directorate of Professional Standards.
No damage is thought to have been caused to the embassy.
