The EU is proposing to keep details of phone calls made, emails sent and websites surfed by all 450 million European Union citizens.
This is in a bid to combat serious crime and terrorism.

The information would be stored for between six months and a year - although some EU countries want to be able to keep the records for longer.

This is essential in the fight against terrorism, claim the backers of the scheme, saying it will provide vital information for police and security services attempting to prevent terrorist attacks and solve serious crimes.

Add a few selected Keywords and who knows who could be monitoring your every move.
It might be like the word scan done on here checking for banned words. But rather than replacing them with astrix you could go on a suspect list.
I found an article from the USA where an FCC bill says that unvercitys and libraries who provide internet services have to upgrade their networks by 2007 to allow easy access by goverment bodies to monitor activity. Here

The monitoring for Keywords isn't reliable enough as too many innocent users would get picked up.

I used the keyword monitoring method a few years ago by monitoring radio data to prove a Flore in a log-in system where although it asked for letters from positions in a sentence it was all done in plain text. Thus I showed where an automated system regularly logged in every hour or so to collect mail how it was surprisingly quick and easy to find the hidden sentence from which the password was made. Easily done using existing (then) legal software with a logging feature by using two keywords. EG User-name (Plain text) and the keyword sent from the server.
My short study was back in I think 1997.
And as far as I know the same system is still used today as encryption is banned in the radio license.

Nothing sinister but I'm sure it must have been exploited over the years.

But the risk of a totally innocent statement being picked up on a couple of words and automated systems misinterpreting things is a worrying thing.

I presume that some people are using so called 'keywords' just for fun, making jokes etc. (it's pretty common over here) - so how does it help goverments fight against terrorism if they are searching only so called 'keywords'? But if anything criminal happens anywhere, I think it's good that goverments can search evidence from stored information.

Let's face it, the CIA are the ones that want to snoop on anyone they chose and Europe seems to be letting them away with it.

This will give a them an good argument for trebling the current manpower at Langley :D

Good point Jim. ECHELON is an invasion of privacy and has been running for a few years now...Fylingdales is where it's all analysed. BT put 100,000 data lines in there about 5 years ago

Echelon, Jihad, Crusade, Allah, and....err.... Time.

Yes, that will flag up nicely.

The EU's proposed system. blah !
The USA is already scanning EVERY single email, phonecall, website, etc etc...and has done for many years.

Indeed, talk about big brother. The Nazi's would have been proud of this particular sort of control.

One of the few steps remaining are to have cameras in every room of every household....all networked to a central police HQ. Think that is beyond what 'they' are already planning? Give it 15 years,...and then you may well start to hear the first 'official' talk about such schemes.

don't worry though, its all in your 'best interest'.

Calrissian: being watched....
