Police have launched an investigation into claims that video tapes and DVDs handed out at mosques in Dewsbury were being used to recruit terrorists.

The tapes, purporting to contain readings from the Koran, were given to Muslims attending two mosques in Savile Town during the weekend's Eid festival.

Local resident Safiq Patel said: "When people played them they realised they were violent jihad videos."

West Yorkshire Police confirmed they were studying one of the tapes.

Mr Patel told BBC News: "These tapes were left at points of public access in the reception areas of the mosques.

"People picked them up thinking they were prayers or readings from the Koran.

"They were shocked to find messages of jihad. It is someone trying to drum up violence, especially among the younger members of the community.

"Somebody is trying to infiltrate their consciences, decision-making and values in the hope of perhaps recruiting the terrorists of the future from this community."

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Members of the local Asian community have brought to our attention these matters.

"On Tuesday we received a copy of the video which is being looked at to establish whether it contains material which would incite violence, racial hatred or acts of terrorism."

The force reiterated its "reassurance message" to the Asian community in Dewsbury, which is still reeling after it emerged that 7 July London bomber Mohammed Siddique Khan came from the town.

Anyone with information about who distributed the tapes at two mosques in South Street, Savile Town, is urged to contact police immediately.

Investigations were at an early stage and anti-terrorist officers from the Metropolitan Police had not yet been involved, she added.

Shocking! Disgusting! Why do they live in this country if they hate it so much!? They should be given an ultimatum - either go and live in an Islamic country or live and let live peacefully!

My bf had a rant last night about the riots in France. He said (and I agree) that you should respect the country that you live in and if you don't like the way of life in that country then go back to the place where you came from or to a place where you suit the lifestyle! Anything else is just arrogance! The mountain won't necessarily come to Mohammhed!

I have a Muslim friend called Osama (no his surname isn't 'Bin Laden' :-? ) and he's cool but it's like having the surname of 'Hitler'' to him. These people are disturbed and they screw up the lives of normal people with their wierd hatred. Fecking disgusting! :8o:

It's no excuse for rioting but I lived in France for a few months and the way a lot of Algerians are treated is disgraceful. Jean Marie Le Pen went for the jugular yesterday saying France is on the brink of civil war.

Typical extreme right wing reactionary bile from him :8o:

JMLP btw is the man who said the gas chambers were a mere detail in the second world war :8o: :8o: :8o: :8o:

For mousier le pen, all his xmas's have come at once. He is certainly enjoying all this rioting. His popularity and support will soar...at least in the short term.

*never forget that at least 5-15% of 'mr average' are essentially NAZI filth - and that includes the UK. There sure has been a lot of 'boot out the non-whites' on the radio talk shows this past week.

Le Pen will indeed be enjoying this. I've seen the attitude towards Algerians in this country and that's bad enough. To be fair it's mainly Turks, Kurds and Morroccans who seem to hate them so much as most Brits don't seem to know even where Algeria is but the situation in France has been dire since 1993 at least. Very disturbing
