LONDON (Reuters) - A female police officer was shot dead and another female officer injured while investigating a robbery in the centre of Bradford on Friday, West Yorkshire police said.

"Police officers were responding to a report of a robbery at a shop premises," a police spokeswoman said.

"Two officers were shot. This proved fatal to one officer and the other officer is injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Police sealed off streets in Bradford city centre around Morley Street.

They received the first call about the incident at around 3:25 p.m.

know that area very well indeed. In fact, lived at the end of that road for a good few months. The cheapest chippy in the world is on there. Very surprised at the location. There's not a lot of places to have a robberty there. There's a couple of Asian shops, couple of small pubs and its about 200 yards from the Police Station.

I know people see Bradford and come up with their own assumptions, but the area isn't some sort of inner city slum. It's smack bang in the middle of the Student area and a couple of miles away from the more famous Manningham area.

From memory, one of the Yorkshire ripper's victims was found just off this small road.

Apparently it was an Asian (Pakistani) small, family-run travel-agency which also dealt with currency conversion so presumably they thought that there was money on the premises. The 3 staff-members were beaten by the robbers and it's unclear as to whether the two police women knew that arms were involved.

Bereavement is always heartbreaking and devastating but I know from personal experience that to be bereaved at Christmas time is even harder than usual and my heart goes out to her family and all involved.

I don't think that there are sufficient words to convey how sad and upsetting this is. I'm so so so sorry for all involved

It's terrible, another tragedy in this crap country of ours. I read somewhere that disipline in this country has broken down. The only thing stopping it from tipping over the edge are the people left with morals and decency. The scum just laugh at us ones left, because the deterrent to comit serious crime isn't there anymore.

The former head of the Metropolitan Police has called for the death penalty to be brought back for police killers following the murder of rookie officer Sharon Beshenivsky.

Despite always having opposed capital punishment, Lord John Stevens has said the killer of Pc Beshenivsky should lose his life as a punishment.

Writing in the News of the World, the former Scotland Yard Commissioner says: "All my life I've been against the death penalty.

"But after the cold-blooded murder of policewoman Sharon Beshenivsky, I've changed my mind


"I genuinely never thought I'd say this, but I am now convinced that the monster who executed this young woman in cold blood should, in turn, be killed as punishment for his crime."

He goes on: "For the first time in my life, despite 40 years at the sharp end of policing, I finally see no alternative.

"Such an extreme act of pure evil can only be met by the most extreme of responses - and that can only be death."

He adds that if the death penalty is not imposed then "wrong really has finally totally triumphed over right, and all civilised society, all we hold dear, is the loser".

Lord Stevens headed the Metropolitan Police from 2000 until January this year, when he was succeeded by Sir Ian Blair.

LONDON (Reuters) - Police hunting a gang of armed robbers who shot dead one female police officer and seriously injured another in Bradford arrested a sixth person in connection with the case on Saturday.

The man was arrested in London.

Police had earlier arrested four men and a woman in the capital during Saturday. All six are being held in custody.

Oh surprise surprise, the suspected people that did this are asylum seekers ...

Yet another situation where are so very weak imigration laws are letting in the scum from countries where this kind of thing is ten a penny. Dont get me wrong, there are real and vailid people who need to more here for their safety, but so many of them really are just economic migrants.

Problem is thou, anyone who expresses this kind of opinion is called names by the PC possies and shouted down, hence are weak policy of letting them leak in and destroy are society will continue

They were asylum seekers? Jeez that does surprise me actually! I would have thought they should know better than to commit crime if they want to stay here. I'm vehemently on the side of (genuine) asylum-seekers but if some fecker wants to come here and commit murder then I say 'send them back or lock them up for life' My ex was an asylum seeker (he saw some terrible things and he lost family members) and he is a decent, normal person but if we allow criminals to abuse the system then we only have ourselves to blame!
The immigration system is a disgrace! They let in criminals and they deport innocent people! We have plenty of 'home-grown' criminals! We don't need more!

LONDON (Reuters) - Murdered policewoman Sharon Beshenivsky will be remembered by a two-minute silence on Friday in Bradford, the city were she was gunned down as she answered an emergency call about an armed robbery.

The Bishop of Bradford, the Right Reverend David James will lead a memorial service and, as the City Hall bell chimes at 3:30 p.m., silence is expected to descend on the city centre.

Beshenivsky, 38, a mother of three children and two step-children, was killed a week ago after she and fellow officer Teresa Milburn confronted men robbing a travel agency.

West Yorkshire Police said senior officers were expected to attend the memorial service.

After a number of initial arrests, several people have been released on bail and the police said on Wednesday they want to question three men and need information about a silver Toyota Rav 4.

"We know the identities of the men, but are not releasing their names at present," a police spokesman said.

The SUV was hired from Heathrow Airport on October 25 and is thought to have travelled north to West Yorkshire early on Friday last week.

Beshenivsky, who was shot in the chest, died on the day of her daughter's fourth birthday.

It's very very sad Jim... I didn't know about the 2 mins of silence but I'm assuming it was at 11 so I've missed it. I'll do it myself later today then. I'm so so sorry for all involved in this. It's just terrible

Detectives hunting the killers of Pc Sharon Beshenivsky have named the three prime suspects they want to question.
The 38-year-old officer was shot dead during an armed raid by a gang at a travel agency in Bradford a week ago.

The suspects are Mustaf Jama, 25, from the north Kensington area of London, and his brother Yusuf, 19, from the same area. Both are of Somali origin.

They also want to trace Muzzaker Shah, 24, who was born in Burnley but has lived in London since 2001.
