Doctor: George Best's 'hours are numbered'
November 24, 2005
LONDON (AP) -- Soccer great George Best's condition has deteriorated and he is unlikely to survive another 24 hours, his doctor said Thursday.
"I have to tell you that his hours are numbered now," Dr. Roger Williams said outside Cromwell Hospital. "It is just not possible to recover. I'm afraid Mr. Best is coming to the end of the long road of his ill health."
The 59-year-old former Manchester United star, who needed a liver transplant three years ago after decades of alcohol abuse, has been in critical condition in intensive care for a week.
"I am afraid that he could die at any time over the next 24 hours," Williams said. "I would be very surprised if he survived another 24 hours."
Williams said Best's condition worsened overnight, with internal bleeding affecting his lungs and other organs.
"There is really no return from that situation," Williams said, holding back tears. "I can't be precise as to the time, but it is the final stages of this illness."
Williams said Best was unconscious and unable to breathe without a ventilator.
"He still is alive, but he's got complications now in the lung for which we are not able to reverse," he said.
Best's father, Dickie, 87, his son, Calum, and other family and friends were at the hospital.
The former Northern Ireland star has been hospitalized with various infections since Oct. 1. His condition deteriorated last Thursday when he was diagnosed with a lung infection. He was put on life support Saturday.
Best, regarded as one of the game's most talented players, retired at 27. He was renowned for his dribbling and memorable goals. He scored 180 goals in 465 appearances for Manchester United and helped lead his team to the 1968 European Cup title.
