"We haven't withdrawn life support because he still had brain activity and so on," Prof. Roger Williams said Friday.

"But I do think the situation is irretrievable and I think it will be within today some time that he will, very sadly, die."

Williams described Best as a "very strong man" but said the 59-year-old former Manchester United star would die within hours.

Sad to see George on his way out, not just because he was a legendary footballer but because he was a genuinely nice bloke.

This is exactly why I wont be 2 faced about the man. You watch all the news shows and all that they'll all say what a legend he was, what a good looking bloke he was when he was younger. No one would dare say the negative truth about the man.

All damn hypocrasy if you ask me........Hell, Hitler loved his dogs. :-?

well I dunno about the football (not my area) but I resent him being lauded for his status and nobody noticing the 'wife-beating' aspect. I'm a survivor myself and so I particularly resent that.

Having said that I am still sad that he's gone. There are people that I dislike intensely (no really!)   but I don't want anyone to die... Interesting you mention Hitler loved his dogs Marti, I read that somewhere too! Apparently he also had his left testicle bitten off by a goat when he was 9! Unless it's an urban myth it might explain the song... :-?

having not googled the wife beating bits, did it happen or are we relying on the trust of the tabloids? The tabloids would make you think he died because he drank on his new liver rather than the ling infection which has killed him.

The bit about Hitler having his testicle bitten off really shocked me but I assume GB didn't ever have a trauma that bad. Sorry I'm digressing. I'm sorry he's gone GB I mean...

He was an unbelievably talented football player that also was a very flawed person.

Well, I idolised George Best when I was a kid growing up in Belfast. He's the reason for me getting into football, and for my almost life long devotion to Man Utd.

He was an alcoholic - a DISEASE his mother died from, and which those of us who indulge in a drink should be down on bended knee to be spared from. He was a flawed man, but I've just been reading about how his two ex-wives were devastated at his demise.

I will never condone violence against anyone - particularly not by men on women, or any adult against children. But I think that he would not have been guilty of this if it had not been for his addiction to drink. He was a genius at football, and from what I can see of the sadness of many of his family and friends, was not a bad bloke in the main.

George Best - I pray that you are now at peace, and thanks for the many wonderful memories.

It wasn't tabloid stuff - I remember the photos of Alex Best covered in bruises :-?

I am afraid I had no time for George Best after that - I am amazed that when he died she called him 'the love of her life' - short memory. :-?
