I've just been listening to a debate on the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 about this and there was some stupid woman who was said that women who are subjected to domestic voilence and rape should be more careful!

Women 'get blame for being raped' A third of people in the UK believe a woman is partially or completely to blame for being raped if she has behaved in a flirtatious manner, according to "shocking" research. More than a quarter also believe a woman is at least partly responsible for being raped if she wears sexy or revealing clothing, or is drunk, the ICM study found. One in five thinks a woman is partly to blame if it is known she has many sexual partners, while more than a third believe she is responsible to some degree if she has clearly failed to say "no" to the man. In each of these scenarios a slightly greater proportion of men than women held these views - except when it came to being drunk, when it was equal. In fact, more women (5%) than men (3%) thought a woman was "totally responsible" for being raped if she was intoxicated. Support groups described the findings as "alarming" and "appalling". The national charity Victim Support urged criminal justice professionals and healthcare workers to "consider how best to educate people about the terrible impact of rape, with a view to changing these attitudes." The opinion poll, commissioned by Amnesty International, also revealed that the vast majority of the British population has no idea how many women are raped every year in the UK. Almost all, 96%, of respondents said they either did not know the true extent of rape or thought it was far lower than the true figure. Only 4% even thought the number of women raped exceeded 10,000. The number of recorded rapes in 2004/5 was more than 12,000 and the 2001 British Crime Survey estimated that just 15% of rapes come to the attention of the police. Amnesty International UK director Kate Allen said the poll, part of its Stop Violence Against Women campaign, had uncovered "disturbing attitudes". ananova |

The poll of 1,000 men and women also found more than 25% believe victims are partly to blame if they have worn revealing clothing or been drunk. Amnesty International UK, which commissioned the survey, said the findings were "truly shocking" and showed the Government's policies on tackling rape were failing. A spokesman said the findings should act as a "wake-up call". "The poll also reveals the scale of public ignorance of the unacceptably high number of women raped every year in the UK," she said. Jenny Watson, acting chairwoman of the Equal Opportunities Commission, said: "There still seems to be an assumption that women are sexually available, so if a woman has gone out to have a good time, then she must want to have sex." Sheila Coates, the director of South Essex Rape and Incest Crisis Centre, said victims - who often blame themselves - are reflecting the blame they can face from society. She said: "Most women who contact us will say, 'This was my own fault'. "That's the mirror of what goes on in a court case. While we have juries who are uninformed, we're going to have rapists set free to do it again and again." The Home Office said it has changed the law to try to improve conviction rates. "We have made a number of changes to the legal system and to how the police and Crown Prosecution Service work, to put victims' needs first and to make it easier for cases to get to trial and secure convictions," a spokesman said. WTF does 'more careful' mean? A gun, a knife on the bedside cabinet? --- Are people really surprised though at this 'third' of UK people blame the woman? The UK remains still very much psychologically retarded in many respects. 7-15% of the population are still outright 'we hate blacks, gays, jews' type. It is no surprise to me that probably 15-25% of the population would believe 'ohhh she deserved it'. Even the concept of 'marital rape' was only relatively recently accepted, and I'd argue that at least 1 in 10 people don't agree that its possible to 'assault' your lover. Never forget that we are still living in a primitive society/culture. There are still an awful lot of idiots out there, and lets be clear...most of them are the type to frequent the pubs and who think getting drunk 2-3 nights a week on 15 pints is cool. --- Calrissian: Living in difficult times. |

When you see answers like this from women never mind men you understand why so many men get off rape charges in court. I also heard women on the radio this morning tell stories about the rape they had suffered after a date, from ex boyfriends, gang rape...... What was shocking to me was at the end of their story most of them ended by saying a lot of women do tease men and ask for it 
I will say we woman are at fault for not putting a stop to the name calling of a sexually active woman. Slapper is the latest adjective to label a woman if she is known to have a sex life. It is also creeping into day time tv shows and popular soaps. So all us women need to get on the phone/text to the tv companies that allow women to be degraded because of their endorsment of the the word and let them know we want them to stop encouraging the simple men who watch their programmes into thinking women are pieces of meat to be used who they think [wrongly] want to be raped. |

I'd say that most women blame themselves Pikey. You're right - it's sad. My rapist said that I 'asked for it' bcz I was out late at night and drinking but I wasn't asking for it. That's wrong. somebody else on here said that the supposed professional (who she intelligently decided to seek help from) actually quizzed her on 'what were you wearing? were you asking for it?' and this from a supposed professional! How do these freaks get their jobs!!!
Nobody wants to be raped - that's like saying you want to be beaten or killed. It's impossible for anyone to 'want' that!
