I remember when I lived in london and it snowed a wee bit, the entire transport system almost shut down! Coming from the baltic north, I found it kind of ridiculous

I'd tell you where she was from but I can't pronounce it! :D She's 87 but she is really funny! She doesn't like bad language and told me yesterday that if she doesn't like someone then she calls them a cunny funt! I didn't know how to reply to that!   ${ ::lol::

In the eight years I lived in England I can recall snow a grand total of twice so it is probably a bigger deal, in that area anyway.

Bless! Old people can be hysterical in a nice way. Not quite sure what I'd have replied to that with either though :-?

Here it has genuinely been freezing cold all day. Walked home at the start of break time and had about 2 and a half hours at home. The walk doesn't take long but by the time I was going back to school my hands were still freezing.

There is talk about snow being on the way at school...

Britain is bracing itself for heavy snow and blizzards as forecasters warned that the weather would cause disruption to many parts of the country.

Scotland will bear the brunt of the snowy weather conditions

Snow will sweep across Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of England over the next four days, and some Southern parts of England will also be affected overnight on Thursday.

A national severe weather warning issued by the Met Office stated: "Areas at highest risk for snow will be northern and eastern Scotland along with Northern Ireland, where winds will also reach severe gale force."

A spokesman for the PA WeatherCentre said that the north of Scotland can expect about 5in of snow on higher ground.

Aberdeenshire Council's fleet of more than 100 gritters and snowploughs has been on standby since last week.

Lothian and Borders Police's traffic branch also warned motorists to take care on the roads after a spate of fatal accidents in the region in recent weeks.

I always walk to school Jim!

Can somebody ask one of those 100 gritters that are on stand by to do my street if it snows? Most of them are quite old and are actually stranded in their houses. I've cleared paths but it doesn't made a difference when they know what the street is like.

A question - what on earth does that child have attached to that rope?

BRITAIN was today hit with heavy snow and blizzards as the forecast cold snap took hold.

The snowfall hit the north of Scotland and it is expected to sweep south across much of the country over the next two days.

A second severe weather warning was this morning issued by the Met Office, predicting heavy snow and blizzards.

The Highways Agency in England and Wales has issued a warning to drivers to prepare themselves and their cars and to slow down on roads.

The Met Office said the heavy wintry showers currently affecting Scotland would move south into Northern Ireland this afternoon, then into west Wales and south-west England tonight into Friday morning.

The warning said: "Showers will fall widely as snow with local blizzard
conditions, especially over high ground.

"Exposed coastal zones are expected to keep a mix of rain, sleet or hail leading to icy conditions."

The north of Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland, south-west Wales and parts of south-west England could see 15cms or more of snow, especially on high ground.

A mountain rescue was launched after four hillwalkers got stranded in heavy blizzards on the plateau of Ben Macdui in the Cairngorm mountain range.

An RAF helicopter from Lossiemouth and four mountain rescue teams are involved in the rescue operation at the mountain, which is notorious for its atrocious weather conditions.

RAF spokesman Michael Mulford said the hillwalkers were in their sleeping bags in a tent on top of the 4,300ft mountain when they raised the alarm.

The Highways Agency said gritters would be treating England’s motorways and other strategic roads where ice or snow is forecast.

The agency is advising drivers to check for up-to-date information on weather and road conditions before they set off, and during their journey.

One firm reported being “inundated” with orders for toboggans from across the country since snow was forecast.

Patrick Polglase, managing director of Bouncy Happy People in Mylor, near Falmouth, Cornwall, said: "We’ve sold more in the last two days than we have done in the whole of this year, so we’re really looking forward to seeing if it does snow.

"Orders have been coming in from all over the country including Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Essex and Surrey, and we’re doing our utmost to ensure that all deliveries will reach customers by Friday so that they can have some fun at the weekend."

Heavy snow and blizzards have begun to hit parts of the UK, as the Met Office issued a second severe weather warning.

As predicted, snowfall has hit parts of northern Scotland and is expected to sweep south across much of the country over the next two days.

The Met Office said at least 15cm of snow could fall in northern Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland, south west Wales and parts of south west England.

The Highways Agency said drivers should prepare themselves and their cars.

The Met Office said Scotland's heavy wintry showers will move south into Northern Ireland on Thursday afternoon, then into west Wales and south west England on Thursday night and Friday morning.

The office's warning said: "Showers will fall widely as snow with local blizzard conditions, especially over high ground.

"Exposed coastal zones are expected to keep a mix of rain, sleet or hail leading to icy conditions."

Motorway gritters

The Highways Agency says gritters will be used on England's motorways and other strategic roads where ice or snow is expected.

It is advising drivers to check for up-to-date information before setting off on their journeys.

In Scotland, four walkers stranded on Wednesday night in freezing conditions on the Cairngorms have been found safe.

The men, in their thirties and believed to be from the Dundee area, contacted police using a mobile phone.

They were in their sleeping bags, sheltering in a tent on top of the 4,300ft Ben Macdui mountain.

Meanwhile, power firm Scottish Hydro Electric has warned of possible widespread damage to the electricity network.

It has drafted extra engineers into strategic points throughout Scotland, including the Western Isles.

Helicopters are also on standby to ferry the engineers to where they are needed.

Also in Scotland, a Highland Council spokesman said there had been no school closures, but head teachers were continue to monitor the situation.

The council has 230 of its staff ready to operate snowploughs and gritters.

Salt and sledging

In England, Hertfordshire Council has stockpiled 12,000 tonnes of salt and has eight roadside weather reporting stations with staff on 24-hour call.

Meanwhile, some people are already taking advantage of the first snowfall by sledging.

One firm reported being "inundated" with orders for toboggans.

Patrick Polglase, managing director of Bouncy Happy People in Mylor, Cornwall, said there had been orders from across the country, including Surrey, Essex, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire.

"We've sold more in the last two days than we have done in the whole of this year, so we're really looking forward to seeing if it does snow," he said.
