By JOHN ASKILL

A GIRL of 16 was sent home from school — for wearing a crucifix.
Sam Morris was banned after refusing the deputy head’s order to remove the Christian symbol, which she wore on a chain.

The school does allow Sikh boys to wear bracelets — known as karas — because they are compulsory under their religion.

Sam’s mum Debra, 37, accused the school of discrimination.

She said yesterday: “Sam has worn the necklace for more than three years."

"It’s very unfair when other people are allowed to wear religious symbols. It just ends up creating a divide between the pupils.”

GCSE student Sam was banned from school but returned — minus the crucifix — after two days.

Howard Jones, deputy head at Sinfin Community School in Derby, said: “We are very comfortable with our policy and believe we are being even-handed and fair. Christianity does not require followers to wear a specific symbol.”

But a Derby City Council spokesman said “It is lawful to ban crucifixes while allowing other religious symbols — but whether it is desirable is another matter.”

Suppose it's another health and safety issue, but many catholics around the world wear a crucifix as a sign of their faith though it's not compulsory.Even in France which is a secular state ffs!!

Madness

Was she wearing it as a sign of christianity or as a fashion item? Maybe I am being cynical but I see pupils at school wearing things like this(they are not allowed) and they have never seen the inside of a church

Shouldn't matter if she's wearing it for religion or fashion...it's not any more offensive than someone elses bracelet.
