Cameron serves up plum jobs to school cronies

SNOOTY David Cameron has dished out top jobs to fellow old Etonians, breaking his pledge to be a man of the people.

Yesterday Mr Cameron appointed multi-millionaire Zac Goldsmith, another former pupil of Britain's poshest school, to be his top environmental adviser.

Eton crony Boris Johnson was given the plum job of Tory spokesman on higher education and failed Shadow Chancellor Oliver Letwin, who was at Eton in the 70s, was kept sweet with the prime position of policy director.

Another old boy Hugo Swire was made Shadow Culture Secretary. A senior Labour Party source said: "Far from looking for the best and the brightest, Cameron has just picked a few old school chums.

"The old boy network is alive and well and living in David Cameron's 'modern' Conservative Party."

When he was elected leader on Tuesday, Mr Cameron - dubbed Lord Charlie by the Mirror - said the Tory Party was too posh and that he wanted to reach out and recruit people from all sections of society.

He promised there would not be "a hint of cronyism" when he served up his new team.

Yesterday Mr Cameron's attempts to turn the Conservatives into an environmentally-friendly party were also greeted with derision.

He pledged to take "tough decisions" to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 60 per cent by 2050.

Environment minister Ben Bradshaw said: "The Tories made no reference to climate change in their manifesto - a manifesto David Cameron wrote."
