Christian leaders have condemned politically correct approaches to Christmas for stifling religious expression.

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams said "silly bureaucrats" wanted to wipe Christian symbols from Christmas.

Writing in the Mail on Sunday, he said it was prompted by a fear that symbols would upset people of other religions.

Former Archbishop Dr George Carey added he had concerns a minority in leadership want to privatise religion.

perhaps the archbishop should remember that Xmas Day is actually a pagan festival and not the birthdate of JC.

fair comment - but the pagans don't get upset that Christmas is celebrated. And if they want to do their winter solstice thing as well that's fine by me. Bit cold to be at Stonehenge at crack of dawn in December though.

it's usually white middle class liberals who get upset (often in my own profession) rather than people from different ethnic backgrounds. Upset is probably the wrong word, perhaps a better way of describing it is people who go furthest out of their way to show that they aren't racist or offending people. I consider myself to be PC and I see nowt wrong with being PC, but some create more problems and tensions by acting in this way.
