My vote is total ban..... smokers can pop outside to smoke a drag, its what thousend do outside their offices durring the day so they will be used to it. The only in members club one is a cynical way for the likes of galloway top still be allowed to puff away in the Houses of Parliaments members bar

I went for members club only as I hate second hand smoke, but a private members club is more avoidable than your average pub if you're on a night out. If I were PM I'd just shut down all ciggie factories anyway. Cue abuse.... |

Well, having lived in a country where smoking in enclosed public places has been banned for almost two years, I think for once I might have something valuable to contribute to a thread! 
I've voted for 'total ban'...but I feel a bit bad, thinking about very elderly people who like to sit in their local with a drink, and smoke.... However, here the ban was brought in to protect the health of the employees of pubs etc, and people shouldn't have to work in a smoky environment. The total ban has worked well here, in Ireland. Smokers don't seem to mind too much - they find they smoke a lot less when out for a night in a pub (funny that...  ), and can even enjoy 'popping outside' - often to a covered area around the pub - to socialise with others they may have seen earlier, but whom they might not ordinarily get a chance to chat up!
When our extended family used to go out for a family occasion, we always used to opt for a 'smoking' table, in deference to the two members who smoked. So 12 or more people who didn't smoke were suffering as a result. Now we don't have that dilemma....nobody has to be selfish, and no-one goes home smelling like an ashtray. The downside is the fact that when you're out in the 'fresh' air, there's a lot of smoke about. And then there's the litter....

Oh .. my reason for banning it is because as an EX smoker I hate seeing other people enjoy smoking when I cant

my mother blames passive smoking when she was younger for giving her cancer. basically people who smoke have always looked like total dicks to me, puffing on there fags to look cool, give us a break and as for the whole nicotine dependancy thing, **** em, recent research has sugested women who use nicotine patches can damage their chances of pregnancy so hopefully the **** will die out

I voted for total ban. I smoke when I'm drunk and in clubs and restaurants, but I'd smoke a whole lot less if I'd have to go outside to do it. Clubs and restaurants are the only places in Finland that you can smoke in indoors. That's why I don't smoke very much; I'm too lazy. They're working on a total ban here too, and I'm glad. I like smoking when drinking, but if forced, I'd quit. |

Total ban.Had it been in place years ago my mother would probably still be here.Plus I've suffered from chest problems most of my life as a result of passive smoking.And I agree with Hippo.Whatever gave smokers the idea that they somehow look cool |

I LOVED being in Dublin for a recent holiday, because of the smoking ban there. And I benefit from it when I go to Donegal too. I can't wait for it to come into being in Northern Ireland too. I have asthma, and also have the problem that smoke gives me a really bad headache. I know that smokers have rights. But they have rights to have sex and to urinate. But they can't carry them out in public places either. So let's hear it for a place where people can enjoy a night out without going home stinking like an ashtry, or suffering from illnesses that have been inflicted on them by the selfishness of others. GG - I know what you mean about the smoke and litter outside, though... I suppose we can't have it all our own way.

It's the best thing to have happened in Ireland for years. I'm delighted the U.K gov was brave enough to make this right decision and to add a hefty fine also if anyone breaks the law |
