Actor Tom Cruise has said he plans to eat the placenta of his new baby.
"I thought that would be good," he told GQ magazine. "Very nutritious. I'm gonna eat the cord and the placenta right there."

It is the latest in a series of unusual revelations by the 43-year-old about the child he is expecting with his fiancee, actress Katie Holmes.

The couple, who have been engaged since June 2005, plan to marry in late summer or early autumn, according to Cruise.

The Mission Impossible star has also claimed he knew Holmes, 27, was pregnant even before she told him.

Last week Cruise said on US television that Catholic-born Holmes has already joined him as a follower of the Church of Scientology.

'Silent birth'

In the GQ interview, Cruise defended the religion's doctrine that childbirth should be completed in silence.

"It's really about respecting the woman," he said. "It's not about her not screaming."

Cruise said earlier this month that their baby was due "any day now".

The baby will be the first for Holmes, while Cruise has two adopted children from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.

Never heard of anyone eating the cord before. The placenta is very rich in vitamin B6 and is often eaten in the belief it prevents post-natal depression.Apparently you fry it in the pan and it's a bit like lambs liver.Usually it's the woman who eats it tho,to replace depleted minerals and vitamins.

Having given birth to two kids, I'd say a silent birth is a rediculous idea. Go on Katie, tell me what you think about it afterwards ;)

Anyway, what are they gonna do if she starts screaming? Gag her? Hit her on the head with a dead fish?

perhaps Tom doesn't want to be disturbed when he's tucking into his placenta and chips!

it's about respecting the woman? Well then - if she wants to shout, let her.. or perhaps he should try giving birth in silence

If he does this rather sick act, can he be charged with 'CANIBALISM' or is he exempt by being a 'STAR'

It's not cannibalism because the placenta is a by product of birth, and she doesnt get killed for it.
Honestly,a placenta is about the size of a liver. Is he seriously going to eat the whole thing there and then??And as for the cord...I would have thought it would have the texture of something like Chicken gizzards and would be inedible unless stewed for hours :puke: :puke:

Hmmm....anyone for liver and bacon for tea? ::lol::

I heard on the radio a scientologist woman say it doesnt have to be silent and it was being hyped up by the papers. She said they aim for as much calm and peace at a birth as possible but if they needed pain killers or to make a noise then that was ok.

I once heard of a woman who took her placenta home in a biscuit tin to plant it under a tree. :-?

I remember being shown my daughters and thinking it was bigger than the baby!! and when my son was born I didn't want to see it. I told the midwife beforehand she could chuck it all away. I thought it was bigger than a liver though :-?

 Tom Cruise has lost his mind for Scientology. :puke: He should better contact "The Victims of the Religions" soon. :-? Until he goes too far with it.

I think that the best place for placenta afterwards is to give it to Researches of Medicine. It's good to see it with your own eyes afterwards and by a midwife or a doctor because for example, if it hasn't came out full, woman is in a big trouble with her health.

Making voices during the labour is natural. It doesn't have to be screaming or shouting, but voice can be loud at times. Making certain voices does help a human being to deal with for example pain and helps to concentrate. I don't think that baby can hear much during the delivery because of the pressure that's around his or hers body and head. And baby who crys after a mother has given birth to him or her is natural too - and necessary!
