Tue Sep 12, 2006 5:14 PM BST MADRID (Reuters) - The world's first ban on overly thin models at a top-level fashion show in Madrid has caused outrage among modelling agencies and raised the prospect of restrictions at other venues. Madrid's fashion week has turned away underweight models after protests that girls and young women were trying to copy their rail-thin looks and developing eating disorders. Organisers say they want to project an image of beauty and health, rather than a waif-like, or heroin chic look. Reuters |

This means that Spencer (if B-Rude do a show in Madrid) is more likely to appear on the catwalk than Posh...

Updated: 18:32, Saturday September 16, 2006 SKY Attack On Fashion Industry A row has erupted between the Government and the fashion industry over the use of "stick thin" models. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has called for very thin models to be banned from the catwalk at London Fashion Week. She has urged the event organisers to follow the decision made by Madrid's show, Pasarela Cibeles, to ban underweight models. Mrs Jowell has warned that ordinary girls feel under pressure to starve themselves to look like them. She said: "The fashion industry's promotion of beauty as meaning stick thin is damaging to young girls' self image and to their health. "Young girls aspire to look like the catwalk models - when those models are unhealthily underweight it pressurises girls to starve themselves to look the same. "The fashion industry is hugely powerful in shaping the attitude of teenage girls and their feelings about themselves." However, the British Fashion Council says it will not tell designers how to run their shows. A spokesman said: "The BFC does not comment or interfere in the aesthetic of any designer's show." |

Fashion show bans skinny models Organisers of one of the world's largest fashion shows in Birmingham have banned very thin models. Models under a British size six will not take part in the Clothes Show Live event at the NEC. A spokesman for organisers, Haymarket Exhibitions, said they had a duty to set a good example to visitors to the December show. It follows calls from culture secretary Tessa Jowell for "stick-thin" models to be banned from London Fashion Week. The Clothes Show Live is one of the largest fashion and beauty events in the world.
