'Pack-a-day crisp habit' warning Quote: Half of UK children "drink" almost five litres of cooking oil every year as a result of their pack-a-day crisp habit, experts warn.
Nearly a fifth of children eat two packets of crisps per day, says the British Heart Foundation. Its Food4Thought campaign aims to expose hidden salt, fat and sugar in common foods. Pictures of a girl drinking cooking oil with the caption "What goes into crisps goes into you" will appear nationwide. A typical 35g bag of crisps contains about two-and-a-half teaspoons of oil. A larger 50g pack contains three-and-a-half. Figures from Mintel reveal that we eat a tonne of crisps every three minutes in the UK. This would be enough to fill a telephone box every 43 seconds and an Olympic size swimming pool every 14 hours. Another recent survey found nearly three quarters of mothers feed their children ready meals or takeaways more than three times a week. By 2020, it is thought that a quarter of UK children will be overweight. BHF is calling for a ban on the marketing of junk food products to children, particularly on the TV and the internet. It also says cooking skills should be a compulsory part of schooling. BHF medical director Professor Peter Weissberg said: "Daily unhealthy snacking is a worrying habit. "Rising rates of childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes paint a particularly grim picture for the future. "The campaign is about challenging our children about what's lurking in their snacks, takeaways and ready meals." more at BBC |

No probs I have to admit to having a weakness for crisps (rather than chocolate) but I try to make sure my kids don't fall into the bad habits I had as a child. They rarely get crisps in their lunch boxes in fact generally the just get sandwiches with two or 3 pieces of fruit and water. Sometimes I feel guilty that they may feel deprived when seeing what their friends have but they themselves tell me they like having a healthy meal. They do get plenty of nice things tbh but only if they have eaten a good meal with more fruit. |

I have a weakness for crisps too. I don't waste my money on those Walkers ones though, a total rip-off. McCoys are nice, and Hula Hoops. But after seeing that British Hear Foundation ad it has made me think about reducing it down to 5 packs a day to begin with...

I was quite surprised at the statistics, but sadly crisps are one of my weaknesses - I prefer a packet of crisps to a chocolate bar, so I can't see this campaign making much of an impact and I do try and eat the healthier variety of crisps. |

I ate a packet of Walkers crisps this evening, and on the packet it said "70 per cent less saturated fat"....that's quite a lot to cut down by? |

Yup, sadly... Starting today, I am 'unofficially' back on that nutrition study that I did at the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen two autumns ago. With panto coming up I intend to be in (hopefully) much better shape than I am just now. When we did the study two years ago, we weren't allowed to do any fitness or excercise that we didn't normally do. This time I'm hoping to do the study and try regular stints at the gym (or pool) as well. Hopefully the combination will do the trick... |

I hope it goes well for you Cameron - I'm doing Weight Watchers at the moment for the first time ever. It's slow progress, as I am NEVER going to be a cottage-cheese-and-lettuce-leaf person, but I have dropped a size over about eight weeks and feel better for it. I'm rubbish at exercise though. |
