Millions Honour The Fallen

Millions of people in Britain and around the world have been paying their respects to those who died fighting for their country.

A two-minute silence was held at eleven o'clock - the time when WW1 officially ended on November 11, 1918.

It has been immortalised as the 'eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month'.

The Royal British Legion marked Armistice Day with Silence in the Square, a memorial service in London's Trafalgar Square.

Schoolgirl Rebecca Sullivan, a year eight pupil from Enfield, recited her poem, There Lie Forgotten Men.

The silence was followed by the traditional Reveille from a lone bugler and a fly-past of four Typhoon jet aircraft by the RAF.

There was a special dedication ceremony at the New Zealand memorial at London's Hyde Park Corner, attended by the country's prime minister Helen Clark.

Tributes were also paid by British troops at Remembrance Day services in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Later today the Royal Albert Hall will host the annual Festival of Remembrance, with an evening performance attended by the Queen and members of the royal family.

On Sunday Her Majesty, Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the royal family will attend the Ceremony of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in Whitehall from 11am.

After the Last Post and a two-minute silence, the Queen will lay the first wreath on behalf of the nation and the Commonwealth.
