TWO climbers caught in extreme weather in the Cairngorms in the north east of Scotland have died in hospital after being found by an RAF rescue team.
Both men were airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness after a major search of the area by an RAF helicopter in hazardous conditions. They had been found by rescue dogs 400 yards from each other.
Both men died after arriving at hospital. The pair, who have not yet been named, were from the Aberdeen area, one was 18 and the other 23.
Police confirmed that the pair were with a group of eight people from
Aberdeen University climbing club. The alarm was raised at 7.30pm after the missing men had failed to show up at their rendezvous point at Glenmore Lodge, near Aviemore, yesterday afternoon.
Mountain rescue launched a major search of the mountain range with the helicopter last night but could not locate the men. The helicopter searched the mountains again at first light while a ground search was conducted with specially trained dogs. The missing men were found around 10.52 am today on the Coire an t-Sneachda peak and airlifted to hospital.
