I agree entirely. The press coverage in this country can be quite ridiculous at times. There's almost something Hollywood about the whole way this is being presented. They've tried to give the killer various nicknames and the whole thing almost seems to be made to feel less than serious - take for example the large number of jokes which already doing the rounds about these killings.

Contrast this with the coverage given to say the Soham murders from a few years back, and it shows the extremes that this country can go to. There's almost a feeling that because these women were prostitutes that they were pretty much asking for it. The same can be said about killings of the likes Jessie James in Manchester earlier this year.

Maybe, its just more difficult for people in this country to sympathise and empathise when the victims aren't squeaky clean pretty middle class girls.

It would appear that the Daily Mail has solved the crime and found the culprits behind it all

Now I'm no fan of Pete Doherty as a human but I don't think I've ever seen such a ridiculous article in my life.

I agree with both Ellie and Northern Monkey. I find the way the some British press deals with stories like this quite sickening. (I'm not saying the Irish press are great, maybe we just have less tabloids).

At the moment, it's almost like some sections of the media are giving the perpetrator of these awful murders the notoriety he or she may crave.

But then, I was disturbed by the nature of some of the coverage of Ian Huntley's attempted suicide earlier this year.

It sometimes feels like some media people are rubbing their hands in glee, wondering how they can turn tragic news into something akin to a pantomime tale.

Far better to listen to what Tania Nicol's parents have to say.

One of the possibilities is that the killer is someone the girls felt comfortable with - a taxi driver, church worker, nurse or even a policeman. He is somebody who does not raise suspicion by being in a red-light district. - Mirror Excerpt

Church worker. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that in my own little initial target list. Call it instinct, or plain old divine inspiration, but I am guessing the guy will turn out to be someone reasonably godly in some cutesy little village.

I've a strong inclination indeed that the current loony toon may well be some surburban guy, who has a real hang up about women in general. Sex-workers are easy targets of course, so they will be more to come.

Cliche' to come...

Ohh, and here is the funny (or sickly) aspect of what appears inevitable. You can bet you ass that the local relgious leader for the area will be (give it a couple of months) on News24 proclaiming he forgives the sins of this once seemingly balanced man.

If I was a member of the UK nazi police force right now, I'd be steaking out all the cute little church groups, getting their membership list, and then sifting it out for that white guy (how come the Asians don't like serial killing?) who is probably out there tonight on the hunt.

It ain't hard to find him. The characteristics by the psy' guy in the Mirror was very much what I was saying. Remember Ian Huntley and the BBC interview? I'd be watching any interviews of 'locals of suffolk' somewhat closely. The most obvious things are often overlooked.

Not fair Cal - it could be anyone. Don't just single out Christians in the speculation. You didn't mention taxi drivers, nurses or policemen either...

‘Prostitution: the problem is not sex ... it’s drugs’

CURIOUS HOW human tragedy changes public attitudes. It took the deaths of five women in Suffolk for us to discover that we no longer regard prostitutes as moral outcasts. They are now "sex workers", as if streetwalking was a perfectly normal occupation for a young woman.

And maybe that's how it is going to be in future. In a few years, perhaps they'll be offering sex therapy courses at night school. As the word "prostitute" falls out of favour, legally-sanctioned brothels and tolerance zones will replace street life. And a good thing too.

Zero tolerance has never worked and never will - so long as men want sex there will be women prepared to sell it to them. A more liberal attitude to prostitution may be the only positive thing that comes out of this string of murders around Ipswich, leaving five women as martyrs to outdated attitudes towards sex and personal freedom.

However, the real tragedy is that, even with enlightened prostitution laws, these "working girls" might still have met a grisly end, for they were all drug addicts. These women would not have been allowed to work in the saunas of Edinburgh because of their addictions. The proprietors wouldn't have wanted them there, and neither would the other working girls.

Victims' spiral into drugs

FIVE women are dead. All were prostitutes. All are known to have been gripped by a drug addiction which snatched away their innocence. Today The Evening Star charts the descent into hell endured by the red-light murder victims - Gemma Adams, Tania Nicol, Anneli Alderton, Paula Clennell and Annette Nicholls.

NO ONE knows the horrors of their final minutes.

They died at the hands of a calculating serial killer, their naked bodies dumped in the open and left to the elements.

COP WANTED IN MURDER PROBE

MURDERED Paula Clennell is pointing the finger at a senior policeman punter from beyond the grave, the News of the World can reveal.

The officer — who works for a neighbouring constabulary — was a regular client to her AND one of the Suffolk Strangler's other victims.

RIPPER HUNT: MAN HELD

DETECTIVES hunting the killer of five prostitutes in Ipswich have arrested a man, they revealed today.

A 37-year-old man was held at his home in Trimley, near Felixstowe, at 7.20am this morning.

The suspect has been taken into police custody for questioning, Detective Chief Superintendent Stewart Gull said.

"He has been arrested on the suspicion of murdering all five women - Gemma Adams, Tania Nicol, Anneli Alderton, Paula Clennell and Annette Nicholls," Mr Gull said.

He did not name the man arrested, nor did he give details of the police station where he is being held.

The investigation began on October 30 when Tania Nicol vanished. Gemma Adams disappeared on November 15. The case turned into a murder hunt when her body was found in a stream at Hintlesham December 2. Tania was found six days later in Copdock.

Anneli Alderton's body was discovered in woods at Nacton on December 10. Paula Clennell and Annette Nicholls' were found dead two days later at Levington.

Inquests into four of the victims will be formally opened today. The inquest of Gemma has already opened.

Suffolk Murders Arrest

Supermarket worker Tom Stephens is the man arrested on suspicion of murdering five prostitutes in Suffolk, Sky News has learnt.

The 37-year-old was arrested where he lived in Trimley, a small town near the port of Felixstowe, at 7.20am.

Det Chief Supt Stewart Gull told a press conference in Ipswich that an unnamed man had been arrested.

But sources have told Sky the man being held held is Stephens.

Police have not said where he is being held but he will be questioned later today.

Mr Gull said: "He has been arrested on the suspicion of murdering all five women - Gemma Adams, Tania Nicol, Anneli Alderton, Paula Clennell and Annette Nicholls."

Police have until Wednesday morning to charge him or apply for more time to hold him in custody.

Stephens was interviewed by the Sunday Mirror yesterday.

He told the newspaper he knew the girls well, had been interviewed by police four times but was completely innocent.

"I'm not worried about being charged - I am innocent," he said.

The bodies of the women were found naked in rural locations south of Ipswich.

Gemma Adams, 25, was found in Belstead Brook at Hintlesham on December 2.

Tania Nicol was found at Copdock on December 8; Paula Clennell, 24, at Levington on December 12, and Annette Nicholls, 29, also at Levington on the same day.

Police have not said how Miss Adams, Miss Nicol and Miss Nicholls died but Miss Clennel was killed as a result of "compression" to the neck.

The inquests into four of the deaths have been postponed.

The murders sparked a major police manhunt and created massive public interest.

Vicky Hall, 17, was murdered after vanishing from her home in Trimley St Mary in 1999. Her naked body was found in a water-filled ditch 25 miles away five days later. Police believe she died of asphyxia. A 27-year-old Felixstowe businessman was accused of her murder but found not guilty by a jury.

Police have not linked the murders to Ms Hall's killing.

The guy had done a BBC news interview last week, lol.

What a classic. Did I not say that?

Calrissian: as usual, correct.

Lol? Is this a laughing matter then?

ellie: curious as to whether or not Calrissian will take back his incorrect slur on the perpetrator being a Church worker or similar.

Apparently Sky has now reported the man arrested this morning also worked as a taxi driver in the Ipswich area.
