It may be more famous for its flat pack furniture than its fry-ups but Ikea is making a name for itself with its full English breakfast.

The Swedish chain is now the place to go for superb sausages as well as swish sofas, experts say

Its budget 95p breakfast, including, bacon, beans, hash brown, sausage, scrambled egg and tomato, was voted top in the fry-up battle with cafés at supermarket giants such as Tesco and Sainsbury's.

A price war means shoppers are abandoning traditional breakfast haunts for their nearest supermarket, where the cost of a hearty English fry-up has plummeted to below £1.

The Swedish shop – also a must for any fan of the humble meatball – has a more expensive breakfast at £1.65 for ten items.

However, Sainsbury's £2.49 six-item offering was favourite for taste, with better quality bacon and sausage on the menu.

Tesco is best for connoisseur customers, who can choose from ten items for 35p each, according to research by Which? magazine.

It said there were fewer reasons to start the day at Morrisons, whose six-item breakfast was the most expensive at £2.85.

The biggest disappointment was Asda's £1.50 six-item breakfast, which included a 'tasteless sausage and hard, dry hash browns'.

Which? said: 'It may be the most important meal of the day but it certainly isn't the most expensive.'

Traditional breakfast menus in Sweden are more likely to feature a sour-milk yogurt called filmjîlk or open sandwiches known as smîrgas.

Shameless bargain-hunter that I am, I discovered the wonder of the IKEA breakfast a long time ago.

Herded long-suffering offspring to the Edmonton branch in June 2005 - had to get there by 11.00 a.m. to avail of the offer.

Love their ginger biscuits too.

Maybe by the end of this year, we'll have an IKEA on the island of Ireland. :D
