Researchers say Scotland's Western Isles are in need of a higher female population.

The researchers hired by the Western Isles Council said women outnumber men only on the island of Benbecula and the number of men is higher than the female population on the other principle islands: Lewis, Harris, North Uist, South Uist and Barra, The Telegraph reported Thursday.

The study found women are leaving the islands in greater numbers than men and more than 70 percent of people moving to the islands are male. The researchers said the islands need to stop about 40 women from leaving each year and encourage more women to relocate to the islands to fix the population disparity.

The only dating agency on the islands folded years ago because of poor business, but dances are sometimes held to help the island's bachelors meet women from the mainland.

They'll better get some of their men into a 5-minutes-fame of being a Celeb - and they'll have women over there! :roll:

and on the other 10 days are the midges so bad it's not safe to go out?

Just wondering, based on my experience on Skye - which in fairness, was a magical place to which I hope to return some day - in the winter, though.

:eek: We don't talk about the midges on Benbecula :eek:

They group I gave battle with could bite you through a waxed coat. They were at their worst around all the GOOD trout lochs :evil:

No, I didn't fish for sport, I fished for food, the Rainbow Trout were superb, as were the Salmon on North Uist. {@}
