Seven held after teenager is fatally stabbed during gang attack · Violence erupted after youth kicked car · Children in school uniform shouted 'kill him' Audrey Gillan - Friday March 16, 2007 A Metropolitan Police photograph of 16-year-old schoolboy Kodjo Yenga who has died after being stabbed by a gang in Hammersmith, west London Police handout of 16-year-old schoolboy Kodjo Yenga. Photograph: PA Six teenagers and a man in his 20s were being held by police last night after the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old in a London street on Wednesday evening. Witnesses claimed the teenager -named by police as Kodjo Yenga - was chased up the road in Hammersmith by a gang of youths wearing school blazers, wielding sticks and chanting "kill him". The schoolboy was knifed in the heart and leg and reportedly kicked as he lay curled up on the road. Article continues A Metropolitan police spokeswoman said yesterday that all the seven males in custody were black. Four were 13 years old, two were 15, and one was 21. Friends of the dead boy, who lived in Portland Road, Hammersmith - less than a mile from the attack - said he had been walking with his Staffordshire bull terrier, a status symbol among some young men, and that the gang might have been trying to steal the dog. One resident, Tom Grimes, 42, said he saw the teenager run into Hammersmith Grove and kick a car. After the car's alarm went off he was chased by the gang. "There were about 15 youths hanging around by the shops. There were girls and boys aged 15 or 16, wearing school blazers. They were getting very rowdy. Suddenly I heard very high-pitched screaming from the girls. "I looked up and saw another youth who was bigger built come rushing into the street with a dog. He booted a blue BMW, causing the alarm to go off." He said the crowd "went wild", then the boys chased the teenager up the road. "The bigger youth definitely wasn't with the others," Mr Grimes added. Another resident said: "I heard a lot of shouting and screaming, and a dog barking. I thought a girl was being attacked by a dog. I went outside and saw a crowd of about 10 kids chasing one boy along the road in and out of the cars. "Some of them had armed themselves with three-foot wooden sticks from a skip. The boy was backing off, and had his arms up to protect himself while they were whacking him with the sticks. "There were a couple of girls standing by the Grove pub, who were getting very excited, like they were enjoying the chase. They were all ganging up on that one poor lad, although he was quite big and seemed able to look after himself. "They went further up the road, and I could see them throwing things at him as he was backing away from them. Two ladies in my street said some of the kids barged into them and they were really worried because one had a knife, so I called the police." Another local resident, Mariam McLeod, said: "I heard a girl shouting 'What are you doing? What are you doing?' At first it was not very loud and I thought it was just a couple fighting, and then I heard it again, 'What are you doing?'. "I opened the window and then I saw this young black man lying on his back in a pool of blood - there was blood all over. The girl was still there, she was crying and was on the phone." Another witness, who did not wish to be named, said: "I saw a fight at the top of the road. There were a big gang of guys chasing a guy with a dog, chucking sticks and shouting. I had to swerve my car because they were throwing things, and the police were there two minutes later." The injured boy was taken to Charing Cross hospital in a critical condition, but died soon after arrival. He was a student at St Charles Catholic Sixth Form College, North Kensington, London. Last month three teenagers were killed in London and a number of other teenagers were stabbed across the country. guardian |

BOY 'MURDERED FOR HIS DOG' THESE KIDS WERE IN SCHOOL UNIFORM AND ONE OF THEM WAS WAVING A BIG KNIFE. THERE WAS SO MUCH HATRED AS THEY SHOUTED KILL! KILL HIM! By Greig Box And Jake Morris 16/03/2007 A BOY of 16 was stabbed to death by a gang of children in school uniform who wanted to steal his bull terrier dog. Vengeful young girls screamed "Kill him! Kill him!" as the 10-strong mob battered gentle Kodjo Yenga with sticks and poles. It is claimed some of the attackers set their own dogs on the boy before stabbing him in the heart and leg. As Kodjo lay dying in a pool of blood in the street, they continued to kick his motionless body. A witness said: "These boys wanted his dog. They like to boast about their animals and breed them for fighting. They'd threatened and bullied him for weeks. "They were younger than him. But there was so much hatred. One was waving a massive knife. One was a well known local gang member. All were wearing school uniform." Kodjo, a studious sixth former and member of a music group that penned anti-knife lyrics, is the fourth London teenager to be murdered in six weeks. Last night police were probing claims he was killed by members of a West London gang called MDP - Murder Dem Pussies. The teenage thugs breed fighting dogs which they set on their victims. Kodjo was targeted as he and his girlfriend Cookie, 15, walked Staffordshire bull terrier Zeeka in Hammersmith Grove, West London. Cookie said last night: "A boy approached and asked Kodjo if he wanted a fight. He said 'no' and the other guy said he was a pussy. "Kodjo said 'Let's do this'. Then eight or nine of them appeared with knives, hammers and bats. They stabbed him twice in his heart and legs. "I put his head on my lap and rocked him, saying "Please don't die. I need you, I need you." A paramedic told me his last words in the ambulance were 'Help Cookie. I love her'." Shop worker Minaxi Patel said: "This gang picked up a pipe which they threw at the boy. "There were about three girls with them who were screaming 'Kill him! Kill him!'" A resident added: "I saw about 10 kids chasing one boy along the road. Some had 3ft wooden sticks from a skip. The boy had his arms up to protect himself as they hit him. "There were some girls standing by looking very excited, as if they were enjoying the chase. It was like a lynch mob." Mariam McLeod was in her home opposite the scene, 100 yards from the home of movie star Ralph Fiennes, on Wednesday evening. She said: "I heard a girl shouting 'What are you doing?' I opened the window and saw this black boy on his back in a pool of blood. A girl was on the phone crying." Police arrived in minutes. Congolese-born Kodjo was taken to Charing Cross Hospital but died at 6.15pm. Best friend Bilal Ayonote said: "He'd had a fight on the day. Then more of them came and that's how he was killed. "It was a case of Kodjo standing up for himself and being attacked." Bilal said he had heard that the gang passed round the knife as they waded into the attack. Another friend said: "Kodjo was a mild-mannered guy who loved school and was polite to everyone he met. He'd never look for trouble. He was ambitious and wanted to be a success." Kodjo, who had 10 GCSEs, lived with his mother L'adjua in Ladbroke Grove, West London. His father is in Zaire. He was studying four AS Levels at St Charles Sixth Form College, in Ladbroke Grove. Last night 100 friends laid flowers and lit candles at the murder scene. Police said: "We urge anyone with information to come forward." Seven males are being questioned. Four are 13, two are 15, and one is 21. Four Charged With Murder March 17, 2007 Four youths have been remanded in custody charged with the murder of schoolboy Kodjo Yenga. The 16-year-old was stabbed to death in a west London street. Kodjo died from a single knife wound to the heart on Wednesday. The charged teenagers, two aged 13, one aged 15 and a fourth aged 16, appeared at West London magistrates' court today. They were remanded to appear again at court on Wednesday. They are charged with murdering Kodjo, of Portland Road, west London, in Hammersmith Grove, a Scotland Yard spokesman said. Superindent Vic Rae from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command said: "This is a nightmare come true for a young man and his family." He said they had 40 witnesses to the incident, but appealed for others to come forward. Officers are continuing there search for the murder weapon in gardens, skips and streets around Hammersmith Grove. Dozens of well-wishers left tributes, in the form of graffiti messages, posters, candles and flowers, at a makeshift shrine close to the scene of the tragedy. Five other youths, aged between 14 and 21, have been released on bail, according to police. It has emerged that Kodjo spoke about knife crime when he was interviewed by the music channel MTV several months ago. He said: "I think stabbing has got worse but the media also make it bigger than what it is." Kodjo, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, had been a student at St Charles Catholic Sixth Form College in west London. Police believe Kodjo was killed as the gang tried to snatch his dog - a Staffordshire bull terrier. Headteacher Paul O'Shea described him as "friendly, gentle and peaceful" with an "excellent record". Anyone with information should call the incident room or 020 8534 4142 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Sky |
