But now Edwina Currie has found a new role as a people's champion in the war against indifferent shop assistants.
The former Junior Health Minister was stirred to action after being thrown out of a Mothercare branch when she complained that three girls stood chatting instead of serving her.
Mrs Currie, 61, had gone into the store with daughter Debbie, 31, to buy a travel cot. The pair were already struggling with a large case and Debbie had her 13-month-old daughter Zoe in a baby carrier on her back.
But instead of finding staff prepared to help them, Mrs Currie says they could hardly be bothered to interrupt their gossiping and regarded her as a 'nuisance'.
