Prince William and his long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton have split up. The couple, who met at St Andrews University, have reached an "amicable agreement" to end their relationship, according to reports in the press. The Sun newspaper claimed that the split was caused by the huge pressures on the young couple and because of the time William has devoted to Army life. William is training to be a armoured troop commander at Camp Bovington in Dorset while Kate is working as an accessories buyer. The couple were widely tipped to one day tie the knot, with speculation mounting after Kate attended William's graduation parade at Sandhurst in December. Miss Middleton faced a barrage of press outside her home on her birthday in January and recently lodged a complaint with the Press Complaint Commission over alleged harassment, which she later settled. With news of their split, royal fans' hopes for a William and Kate wedding have been dashed. Since William started his training course in Dorset on March 16 they have seen each other no more than once a week, according to the Sun. A "close friend" of the couple told the paper: "As far as Kate is concerned, William simply hasn't been paying her enough attention. "She is stuck in London while he is living in an officer's mess in Dorset. Kate feels hugely frustrated that their relationship just seems to be going backwards at a rate of knots." |

Souvenir trade loses millions High Street stores poised to make millions of pounds from the hotly anticipated Royal wedding have been left looking sheepish by the shock break-up. Woolworths had come up with a raft of souvenirs including the traditional plates, mugs, spoons and tea towels as well as a special mobile phone, fluffy slippers and a computer mouse mat. One plate design revealed last November featured pictures of the couple surrounded by a gilt edge. Beneath the pictures was the message "Celebrating the Royal marriage of William and Kate", with a space left for the month, date and year. The company said it hoped to avoid a repeat of Prince Charles and Camilla's wedding, where it was caught short by the brief engagement period and missed out on £3million in sales. It had plans in place to manufacture and send out thousands of items from the William and Kate range to shops across Britain within 48 hours of an announcement. A spokesman for Woolworths said: "Nothing was put into production. We were just at the design stage. We were waiting for a date for the wedding that we could put on the items. "If the stories are true, then these designs will have to be shelved for the time being." It was also bad news for thousands of punters who had placed bets on William and Kate marrying. A spokesman for William Hill said it had expected to pay out more than £50,000. Prince Harry is now favourite to get engaged first, with odds of 1-2 he will beat his older brother to it. Sad to hear that this happened...can't have been easy for either of them, to have to reach this decision, and by all accounts, Kate had the patience of a saint.. On a brighter note, my daughters are back in with a chance now - you know, we have a picture of them outside Buckingham Palace on top of our t.v... I've always fancied standing on that balcony, as mother of the bride....waving to the adoring crowds. |

The Middleton Class - Why Prince William Dumped Kate Middleton 16th Apr 07 middleton.jpgFAREWELL Kate Middleton, The People’s Girlfriend, to Prince William. Not that Kate ever stood a chance of being Williams’ wife. You see, it’s all a matter of class, breeding if you will. In “SNOBS WHO DID FOR KATE”, the Mirror looks at the “mates” who “sneered” at Kate’s mother. It hears “snobby jibes” and “snotty pals” mock Carole Middleton’s past as an air-stewardess. “Doors to manual” they would sneer as Kate moved out of earshot. A Royal “insider” says of the Middleton matriarch: “She is pushy, rather twee and incredibly middle-class. She uses words such as ‘Pleased to meet you”, ‘toilet’ and ‘pardon’”. As readers know, the correct terms are “Hello Ma’am”, “What do you do?” and people in polite society never go to the little princess’s room but employ a wallah to do it for them. “COMMON TAUNTS CAUSED KATE SPLIT,” says the Star. Mirror readers learn that Carole has a habit of chewing gum. It is our studied belief that Carole should be shot until dead, skinned and her entrails fed to Prince Charles’s organic pigs. We admire Her Majesty’s restraint. Nonsense, says Arthur Edwards, the obsequious Royal snapper. “It tells us more about the snobbery of the commentators than about the Royal Family.” He cites the success of middle class Sophie Rhys-Jones, wife to The Weed In Tweed that is Prince Edward. If they can enjoy a successful marriage, anyone can. But the Mail’s A.N. Wilson will not be denied. “She’s got more class than these sneering snobs,” says he. “How would you feel is your son introduced you to his girlfriend’s parents, and the mother said ‘pleased to meet you’ rather than ‘how d’you do?’ Or asked to use the toilet, rather than the lavatory or the loo?” Why, says a Mail reader, we’d line her up against the privet and plunge a gardening fork through her heart. Is not life about standards? Without standards, how can we aspire? Wilson moves on. He says the Queen reportedly “’couldn’t believe it’” when Carole Middleton behaved in such a fashion. Wilson writes: “Being married to the head of State calls for qualities which middle or working-class women are just as likely to have as the daughter of a duke.” The Mirror’s Royal raspberry James Whittaker does not agree. Says he: “I just don't think she had the breeding quite honestly and I'm not being snooty I'm being factual.” Facts. The lifeblood of newspapers... anorak |

Edwards' cloudy crystal ball Whenever there's a royal story, Sun snapper Arthur Edwards is always on hand to dispense his wisdom. With news of the Wills and Kate split broken in Saturday's Sun, Arthur - a "pal of them both" - claimed to have known about it all along. "I had an inkling the breakup was coming," he opined. "William privately admitted to me that he didn't plan to get married until he was at least 28." However, he kept these doubts to himself when he appeared before a select committee of MPs last month. In remarks that we reported here and were then followed up widely, even making the Evening Standard's splash, he said: "I am sure that one day they will get married, I have talked to him [William] about this... He has made it clear that he wants to get married and I believe what he says." Perhaps tellingly, the Sun gave Arthur's musings just two paragraphs on page seven of the following day's paper.
