'No current plan' to quiz McCanns

The parents of Madeleine McCann will not be re-questioned at the present time over her disappearance, Portuguese prosecutors have said.

The attorney general's office said no new evidence had emerged to justify questioning Gerry and Kate McCann, who remain official suspects in the case.

Prosecutors said investigations into other lines of inquiry would continue.

Madeleine, now aged four, went missing during a family holiday in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on 3 May.

The McCanns were declared suspects in the disappearance of their daughter on 7 September.

BODY OF GIRL, 5, FOUND

THE body of a missing five-year-old girl whose abduction was linked by police to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been discovered in a forest in Switzerland.

Ylenia Llenard was snatched from a public swimming pool in the Swiss town of Appenzell on July 31.

Her photo was shown to Kate and Gerry McCann as police across Europe probed links between the two cases. Her suspected abductor was 67-year-old Swiss man Urs Von Aesch, whose dead body was found on the day she disappeared and in the same forest where Ylenia’s body has just been found.

It was uncovered by a passer-by between Oberbren and Niederwil on Saturday. It had apparently been dug up by wild animals. Von Aesch is thought to have shot a man who challenged him shortly after he buried the body, then turned the gun on himself.

Police later discovered he had been on holiday in the Algarve when Madeleine disappeared in May.

WE ARE BEING BUGGED
Phone call fears of McCanns

Kate and Gerry McCann believe their mobile phones and emails are being bugged by British police.

They are convinced that officers are acting on behalf of Portuguese detectives who suspect the couple accidentally killed daughter Madeleine, four, and hid her body.

Friends also fear their private talks are bugged. One source said: "There's a firm belief Kate and Gerry were listened to in Portugal and that it's happening now they're home. That belief is based on information they received during the investigation.

"Kate and Gerry are entirely innocent and have nothing to hide.

"But they're understandably cautious about what they say on the phone and in emails.

"Gerry will often refuse to talk on a mobile. He prefers landlines as he considers them safer."

A key part of the investigation into missing Madeleine is said to focus on emails and calls between the McCanns and their friends.

Foreign police cannot carry out covert surveillance in Britain.

But they can file a Mutual Legal Assistance request asking for a bug to be installed.

If the request is agreed by senior officials up to Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, the Home Office can give the go-ahead to local police to bug any suspects.

Gerry, 39, is "certain" Portuguese police spied on his and Kate's mobiles while they were in Praia da Luz where Madeleine vanished on May 3.

Officers confronted the couple - who are now home in Rothley, Leics - with evidence that could only have been obtained from private conversations.

Our source revealed: "Kate and Gerry were warned when they were in Portugal their phones and emails might have been tapped.

"They remain concerned that even though they're back home, this is still going on.

"It's assumed that it's taking place. It makes them feel uncomfortable. They feel they're being watched at all times.

"It would be entirely wrong to say that their phone conversations are in any way furtive as a result.

"But they'd obviously not want to disclose the way in which they plan to conduct their defence. Everyone is being very careful."

A senior police source said last night: "There would need to be high level meetings before anything like this could be done.

"But if I was someone in government I'd have got it done to ensure we knew as much as possible, given that the case involves UK citizens."

Neither the Home Office nor Leicestershire police would comment on the fears.

A spokesman for the McCanns also refused to comment.

Friends say Kate and Gerry and their legal team are growing frustrated at the lack of communication from Portuguese police.

The couple's lawyers are said to be "working in a vacuum" trying to prepare a defence.

One friend said: "The defence is having to draw up a case without knowing what the allegations are.

"The whole thing is full of huge frustrations and worries.

"They are very frustrated and concerned that they have as much information as possible at the right time."

Portuguese police admit Madeleine MAY have been abducted after all

Portuguese detectives have admitted that missing Madeleine McCann may have been abducted - after not finding enough evidence to to further question Kate and Gerry McCann.

In a dramatic u-turn police have once again reverted to earlier theories that the four-year-old may have been snatched or involved in an accident.

Kielty's vile Maddy case

Comedian Patrick Kielty left an audience in a state of shock with a string of vile jokes about Madeleine.

The tasteless material was met with stunned silence by a 1,000-strong sell-out theatre audience.

To gasps of disbelief, Kielty, 36, joked that Gerry and Kate should have checked Madeleine's body in as Ryanair luggage to dispose of her.

The former Love Island TV host also sent up the McCanns' meeting with the Pope, linking the church with child abuse.

He then joked that the couple had been backstage at 6pm, but when he checked two hours later they had disappeared.

He even asked a reluctant audience to vote on the McCanns' innocence.

Outraged barman William Boland, 24, stormed out of the show with a group of friends.

They went to a nearby bar for a drink then saw Kielty walk in after the show and confronted him over his act.

William said: "I went up to him and said who do you think you are making jokes like that?

"But he told me he could say whatever he liked and if I don't like it I can always leave.

"I told him I did. I felt like hitting him."

Sarah O'Riordan, 22, also left Dublin's Olympia theatre early.

She said: "The guy who was on before Kielty was brilliant. But then Kielty came out and it just wasn't funny.

"When he asked people to put their hands up if they thought the McCanns had done it, I saw one person put their hand up.

"Around five or six raised their hands to say they hadn't. It was awful."

Last night a spokesman for Kielty said: "Patrick apologises to anyone who may have taken offence.

"More than 1,000 people attended last night's show and the small number of walk-outs reflects the sensitivity of those few people, rather than the content of the show.

"Patrick is a comedian and the material was written to reflect the media's changing attitude towards the case and should be taken in that context.

"He performed the exact same material last week in London with no complaints whatsoever."

Madeleine McCann coverage makes many people uneasy

LONDON - Madeleine McCann has been missing for more than four months, but the British girl's presence is everywhere.

Millions of words have been written and broadcast about the three-year-old who disappeared during a family holiday in Portugal in May. In print, on television and online, millions of people follow the search for the wide-eyed blond child whose face beams from posters and front pages worldwide. Reports speak of blood traces, DNA matches and "the scent of death" uncovered by sniffer dogs.

But as the weeks pass without a breakthrough, many are growing uneasy about the gap between the lurid round-the-clock coverage and the scarcity of hard facts.

"I want to stop reading, listening, watching, Googling, amateur sleuthing," wrote columnist India Knight in the Sunday Times. "I nauseate myself with my own prurience."

Murat 'no longer Madeleine suspect'

Robert Murat, the first person to be declared an official suspect by police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, has been told he is to be cleared, it was reported.

British expat Mr Murat, who lives with his mother in a villa less than 100m from the spot where Madeleine was last seen, was taken in for questioning by police 11 days after the four-year-old disappeared in May.
